i'm in the process of changing my starter on my car. if anyone has done this, will the started be able to come out with the lower end of the exhust manifold in the way? and how long did it take you, because a few of the bolts are mothers.

yup, the way to do it is drop the y-pipe, but i wasnt about to do that. so i some how
removed the solinoid (sorry about the spelling) from the starter and it pulled right out. it was not a fun job.
but it was easier than dropping my gas tank thats for sure.
good luck

actually, just now, i got it out without droping the y-pipe. it was a tight fit, but it came. it just took alittle twisting, but for the most part, came out pretty easily.

A LT1 starter is a smaller unit and has more power (turns over a 10.5 LT1) next time you need a starter get one. It just bolts in. At least mine did, and you wont have to drop your Y-pipe again.

When I put the lt1 starter in my car I had to lengthen a few of the wires no big deal. They are lighter, provide more torque, and sound a helluva lot cooler.

Thumbs up

pulling the starter out is easy....Putting it back in is a B!@ch!!!!!! Laying on your back with a 20+ lb. weight in your hand above your head......trying to fenaygle( sounds good) the beast back into the hole.
It can be done( I have done it three times without dropping exahust) with patience and alot of arm strength.

You can get it out without removing the y-pipe. I had a 92 S-10 with a vortech 4600. I had to put a starter in it. It is a pain hope your forearms are strong, like someone else said. It's like laying on your back and waving at the sky for half an hour with a 20lb. weight in your one hand. don't get to upset, I kinda layed mine pararell with the car and slid it in and giggled it and so on till you get in in there. the best way to figure it out. get all the wires disconnected and just get it out. and watch how you have to turn it and slide it to get it back in.
