some upsetting news...need help

Well about a week ago i bought my 1990 350 camaro. Today it went in to get emission tested (damn ontario laws) and it bombed out big time. For example one of the things they measure is hydrocarbons and youre allowed 69 (not sure what that measurement is in) and well my car came out with a 271 in that department. Roughly all of the 5 tests were about 6 times higher then theyre allowed to be. So now the work starts to get it in shape. One of the first things that comes to mind that could be a problem is a stuck egr valve, also thinking the next best bet would be to clean the air filter in the car. Does anyone have any other sugestions as to things i should do in hopes of bringing my emissions down to a pass

I hear ya. When I bought my 79 Malibu I brought it to get inspected, thinking that it would pass with flying colors......it flowed over 2000 hydrocarbons.....thats right 2000!!!!!
Check the catalytic convertor, check the plugs, change the oil, check the plug wires too......that stuff should help you out a little.

Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, set the timing, fuel filter, air filter, oil change, injector cleaner....that's a pretty good tune-up for these engines and it's generally what I do to any vehicle I buy.

yeah i had planned on doing a complete fluid change in the car anyways so ill probably do all of that. I'm just wondering how the previous owner got this thing to pass last time he did it plan to give him a call soon hes a pretty nice guy so hopefully he will be a little help. But i guess other then that its just a matter of going and replacing all of the little things.

the other question i had is how the hell do you run a turbo in your car and still pass the emissions every year because im thinking extra air means more fuel means way more hydrocarbons bringing us way over the legal limits. And im not sure what its like everywhere else but our cars have to be tested every freaking year

Isn't the reason GM had these cars running so damn hot emmissions? Running hotter results in a more complete burn...

Here's what ya need to do- you obviously need a cat...that will make th ebiggest single diff in your numbers.

the second thing you need to do is check for proper egr functioning

the 3rd ting you need to do before going back is give that deal a nice tune up, some wires, plugs, injector cleaner, cap rotor, etc.

All that should get you either passing or close to it
