Smog stuff removal?
Smog stuff removal?
I'm from FL so I don't have to worry about emissions and I'm wanting to know what all I can take out. Air pump, cats, etc.
Also if I take out the air pump will my computer start freaking out and begin throwing codes?
Thanks!!

Re: Smog stuff removal?
Yes, you can take out both. The ECM has no way of directly knowing that those parts are there.
However, I seem to recall that I had to keep the air injection system diverter valve plugged into the wiring harness (has 2, 2-wire plugs going to it). As I recall the ECM threw the penalty flag when I unplugged it. However, I am working from very old memory here so you might want to just keep this in the back of your brain in case you run into a problem. Or maybe someone who has done this more recently that I have could chime in.
Also worth adding.... once you remove the air system it really cleans up the engine bay. Given that you're also deleting the cat at the same time you might want to just spring for some non-emissions headers (that don't have air tube fittings). A set of Dynomax shortie headers are pretty easily installed in your driveway and come with a fresh (and much better flowing than stock) y-pipe. Why do this? Well, when you cut out the cat you're going to have to patch the exhaust back together again anyway (probably at a shop which will cost money), so it would be a perfect time to upgrade.

Re: Smog stuff removal?
I have an 87w/305 and just finished removing the smog pump, cat and everthing envolved with the smog. I install headers so that I would not have to plug the manifold and have had no problems with the ecm. The EGR system is still hooked up as it came from the factory. This was the biggest improvment that I have done to improve HP. As far as the 2-2plug wires that DAMON was talking about all that I did was tape them up out of the way but there are no codes popping up with the service engine lite. By the way I put Flowtech headers on mine w/jet hot coating.

Thanks guys. I'll get to taking that stuff out when I have a day off. I'm currently on 12hr days working for the man
I'm trying to eliminate everything that could be causeing my car to freak out. Lately it has been really sluggish and when I go to take off from a stop light it wants to bogg down and try to die, then something kicks in and it goes like crazy. Only happens when I'm in gear/ there is a load on the engine. Last time it did it, I heard loud pinging and knocking from under the hood while it was trying to die on me. Almost like something hit the floorboard hard, so I pulled over and parked it for 2 days. It was raining and cold so I didn't want to deal with it. Before that It had been getting harder to start and the tranny isn't hitting the shift points like it use too either.
When I went back, I was able to start it up after a few tries and drove it home. It didn't try to die, it only does it every so often, but it was really sluggish.
Someone has mentioned CAT being clogged, but I'm not sure. I'm not getting the red hot pipes at night or anything. Could the tranny be going out and making this noise?
My poor car.
