Shifter Question

Is the Hurst Dual-Gate console a good shifter for IROCs? Anybody know if they are easy to install? Also, are these shifters ratchet-action like the B&M? And is the B&M console Megashifter as big of a pain in the A$$ as I've read? Thanks

Re: Shifter Question

I have the B&M megashifter, and it wasnt that hard, i think the biggest pain is actually runing the shifter cable, it seems that it likes to bind up because it is so long, but once you find a sweet spot, you are good to go. In addition, I dont know about other shifters, but the megashifter can take almost any shift ****, I currently have one of those light up flame shift *****, it's really sweet. But its not that big of a pain in the ***, it goes as smoothly as any other mod job. People expecting direct bolt in would definitely be disappointed, but if you dont mind doing a little bit of work, it's not too bad.

Re: Shifter Question

The B&M shifters tend to be awkward to operate at first but you quickly get used to the full ratchet action. You definety wont miss a shift.

And now i have a question

I have a stock 700R4 transmission, and after installing this shifter will i be able to lock any gear i want in ratchet mode? I understand that after locking a gear , the transmission won't upshift or downshift automatically? My transmission is pure stock, doesn't even have a transgo kit.

thanks for any help, i live in Poland and very few people know anything about US cars

Re: Shifter Question

Well what do you mean by lock? You cannot shift into N,P,R without pulling up this lever, but as far as 1-OD go, you pretty much just shift right through them. Could you please clarify what you are looking for?

Re: Shifter Question

The hardest part of the install is getting the backup light and the neutral safety to work. Also you will lose the ability to have the tranny locked in park when the key is out. IOW, when you shift it out of park, it is able to roll even when teh key is out of the ignition,

I did that and later changed it back to the stock system because I had teh tranny built up and the shift RPM reset to whatever I wanted. That way it is consistant.

Re: Shifter Question

You could have just kept it in 4/OD then, you don't HAVE to use the shifter, and yeah, there is no shifter locking with this shifter when the ignition is turned off, which makes this car REALLY easy to steal/tow with this shifter. The switches werent the hard part for me, by biggest problem is getting the shifter to shift smoothley because the shift cable is really touchy at times. Overall I love mine tho, I put a shift ball on it, one of those light up ones with flames, pretty sharp.

Re: Shifter Question

I like my B&M mega shifter,it did take awhile to get used to it,and was a little hard to get it into reverse from park at first but has loosend up some what. It did have a problem with the rachet part comming up and hitting the shift plate and eventualy pulled the scews up out of the counsol. Seems the mechanizm would hit the shifter boot, after a little triming it's fine. The hardest part of the install I found was wiring the relay for the hatch release. From a 1-10 I'd give it a 81/2 to 9. I think that I would have gone with the Starshifter if they had a counsol mount like the Mega.

Re: Shifter Question

My brother and I installed a dual-gate this summer in my '91 Z and although it was a challenge, it works great! I always preferred the custom look of the dual-gate vs. the big-boot mega-shifter, but that's just my personal preference. You can check out pics of the finished product on my website...
