rear brakes

I'm finding myself in need of work on my rear brakes. Since I'm going to have to sink some decent money into them, I was wondering, is there any benefit in switching them from drum to disc? Or should I just stick with the drum brakes like it came with?

Well, it's not an easy swap to do. It's not just all the stuff on the rear axle- it's also the master cylinder, propertioning valve and I beleive the parking brake cables are significantly different as well. Just go into it with your eyes open.

Benefit? Sure. More consistent stops, probably quickler stops in most cases and discs look way cooler behind the wheels. If you're going racing where having good brakes is important (road racing, autocrossing) then they're definitely worth it. If you're going drag racing, however, old drum brakes are the way to go (they're lighter and can be adjusted loose so they have no drag at all on the rear axles).

Where'd you get a weird name like that anyway?

I just put a 4th gen rear in with disc's, my master cylinder is the same as the rear disc cars (J65 i think as opposed to the earlier drum cars having the J50). I got new lines from a place on the internet for rear disc cars, but Im running the stock prop valve, its OK for the time being. The problem is that the rear discs are as large as the front discs lol. Havnt figured out ebrake cables yet though, thank god I have an A4.

Well, the brake job will be for my mechanic to do, not me I have no problem with throwing money at it.

As for the name.. you'd have to ask my parents, lol.

Thanks for the info
