3rd gen starters are **** to what we call "heat sink" it is caused by the starter being positioned so close to the exhaust and after a short time of driving the solanoid will heat up and when you try to start it next time it will not start or start hard

it happen to me when i had my first 3rd gen a 1986 z28 b4c police pkg i had to replace the whole starter but after i should have just replaced the solanoid

first i would take out your starter and have some one test it to see if it is working properly then you will find out that you will either need a whole new starter or it is just the solanoid and i would also install a heat shield or wrap it with some of that heat tape

hope that helped and good luck

My car will sorta do that. In the morning I just barely turn my key and the car starts right up. I then drive it to college and a few hours later I leave to go to work and it usually takes 4,5 cranks to fire it up. I have a heat shield on my starter silenoid to protect it since the last one left me in the middle of no where.
