Manually cranking the car?

I read a post on installing a new distributor and trying to get the timing back. I took my distributor out when I took the intake off. Having a hard time getting it back to where it was. How do you manually crank the car to get the crankshaft pulley mark lined up on '0' on the metal guage thing? Do I just keep turning the car till it gets there, or do I have to turn the crank pully?

Thanks alot guys.

A couple of ways to do it. First of all make sure all the spark plugs are out. It makes cranking the engine by hand much easier.

The best way is with a flywheel turner but you need to be under the car to use it.

If all the plugs are out you can crank it over using a socket on the balancer bolt. only turn it so that it's tightening and make sure you don't tighten the bolt. You just want to turn it enough so that the engine cranks over. If you go past the timing marks you should go all the way around again twice. If you want to try backing up, you risk loosening the bolt off. If you do manage to back up, turn past where you want to be then tighten up to the mark.

Thanks alot man. I was to excited to wait for an answer so I went out and saw the bolt. Turned it without taking out the spark plugs. That was a b*tch. Put the distributor back in and it fell inplace like it was supposed to be. Freind started the car and I adjusted it by ear and turning the distributor. Tapping everywhere....HAHA..... Took off the drivers side valve cover cause thats where most of the noise was and I found a wrench i left in there....No J/K.....3 Rocker arms were loose so I tightened them. Started it back up.....No noise at all on the drivers side....No more back firing either. .....Started to rain so Im gonna do the passengers side asap. Thanks alot guys for your help.
