L98 Questions

Hey guys, I have a couple of questions about the L98 engine. (I know pretty much nothing about them).
How many bolt mains do they have? Are there a lot of aftermarket parts available for them? And, how about the reliability of the engine?
The reason I am asking all these questions is I am in the market for a vette and need to decide whether to get the LT1 or the L98. I know this is a Camaro forum, but any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

AFAIK on the camaros they have 2 bolt main. The LT1 has the coolant flow reversed to flow from the head to the block not vice versa. L98s are cheaper and can be modded just as well. I would suspect there are more parts for the L98 than the LT1 and in any case, both have the same power potential because there is no replacement for displacement. The L98 has a crappy intake but you can replace that and get the EPROM redone and make as much power as an LT1

The Corvette has 4-bolt main blocks in both the L98 and LT1. The Camaro/Firebird got 2-bolt mains. I would not categorize the stock TPI intake as 'crappy'. It works fantastic for its intended purpose, and that is to build tremendous torque in the low-mid RPM ranges. The Corvette TPI uses external EGR, has slightly higher compression and uses aluminum heads from mid-1986 on. In stock trim, the LT1 is the more powerful engine. Either can be modded as far as you want to go. L98 reliability is very good, as is the LT1. The one thing to bear in mind if you go for an LT1 is the waterpump/OptiSpark deal. If the waterpump goes (leaks) it usually will take out the Opti also, as it is right next to it.

Either would be a good choice, IMO.

IMO, the LT1 has the same final potential as the L98. They are both still 350 blocks. However, if you run stock for stock, the LT1 will be better.

Well, right now, I have a 97 z28 with the LT1, so I do know quite a bit about the LT1. I just wanted to see if the L98 has a lot of potential for making HP. I guess L98 will be the one to go with, if it is just as easily modifiable. It should also be a good change from my top-end happy LT1 (thanks to my cam). Thanks for all the info guys.

I've never seen or heard of a Corvette L98 block with 4-bolt mains, but that doesnt mean they arent out there. Have you seen one?

The L98 engine is great for making torque, and makes an excellent street engine. However, since you are already used to the LT1 engine, that might be a better choice for you. Unless you want to try something different. The L98 engine will have a greater parts selection, and the parts are cheaper, but you will get better online support with an LT1. Basically it comes down to what you can find out there in your price range. Personally, I would look at 89 and up Corvettes only.

I think you're right, Kevin. My mistake. The L98 did not come in a 4-bolt main in The Corvette. The LT1, however, did come with 4-bolt mains in the Corvette; 2-bolt in the f-bodies.

I'll post only because it might make a difference in what you get. As stated the L98 in the mid 80's Corvettes got 2 bolt main blocks.

I'd go w/ the L98. I'd rather have all that low end torque. And if you've got an LT1 already (which you do), I'd be up for a change. Either way Vettes=

L98's
