Question HEI in my 87?

Whats the deal with the separate distributor and coil on my 87 LG4 T/A?

That sounds like your computer controlled distributor and its coil which is hooked up to your ecm that also controls your carburetor based off of readings from various sensors and what not.

You can convert to HEI vacuum advance type if you want. An older style Q-jet or new aftermarket carb would be neccessary for that also.

Ummmm... Yes it is HEI. They came in 2 styles: coil in cap and remote mount coil.

The remote mounts were designed for better clearance in tight engine bays.

Call it what you want to, if it ain't got vaccum advance and it has more than a bat and tach line plugging into it, then it is probably a computer controlled set up. That is not the one I think BAMAZ28 is used to dealing with in his older second gen car.

Yes, it's an electronically advanced HEI with remote mounted coil, and yes controlled by the computer. Set timing according to the procedure and #* on the VECCI label under the hood. It's the one that also has the type and gap for the plugs and vacuum line diagram.
I think he was just suprised by the remote coil set-up...

Thanks

Yes I was surprised when I saw the remote coil. Hmmm.... is this a good thing or a bad thing? I was expecting the...usual...HEI, like on my 81 SBC. I guess it has it's advantages. Once again, thanks

Good...bad... ? The only downside to having the remote mount coil is having the terminals closer together - better chance for crossfire/misfire.
