Fuel Starvation

anyone know how i might cure this??? Perhaps an inline pump rather than intank? It sucks once I get low"er" on fuel. My carbed car would sling all the way till it was empty, but my iroc starves in u-turns and stuff once I get under a 1/4 tank........ Any ideas?

It's more likely a fuel sloshing problem than anything else. When you turn a tight corner centrifugal force will pull the gas to one side of the tank. If you're low enough on fuel this can uncover the fuel pump pickup and that's what causes fuel starvation. The solution? Keep it at least half full all the time. You could get a baffled tank, but it's probably not worth the money unless you autocross it.

Well, out here gas is still in the 2.09/gal for 91...... so I try and get as much out of each tank as I can. Keeping it above 1/2 at all times seems like a pain. What about switching pump setups?

You will need to sump the tank and put the pickup into the sump.
Or get a 1LE baffled tank.
I have that problem with mine, and I have an inline pump.
Really Hard braking would stall the car if I run with 1/4 or so of gas in the tank.

the 89 should have a baffled tank. If it is the 86 then it doesn't. I installed a Holley 255GPH intake pump in my 87 and have not had a problem since. You may want to change fuel filters and clean the injectors as running the tank low picks up any junk in the tank and restricts flow. You should never run below 1/4 tank and the pump is cooled by the fuel. It will cause the pump to burn out. Just my .02
