Fuel Pump ARRRGH!!!
Well after 13 years of flawless reliabilty...I am led to believe that my fuel pump is dead. Recently I have been having trouble with the car....Starting it and when I put it in drive she dies(only did this twice) Coming home today and SHUT DOWN!!! Just as quick as you can read the words SHUT DOWN. Now granted, my oil pressure unit malfunctioned(kept running the fuel pump even when car was off) about a month ago and I had to unplug it to bypass emergency fuel switch. When I plugged it back today I got nothing. When I turn the key to on...No whirring of the fuel pump. Just replaced Lock cylinder, so I know it is not the vats. Checked the fuse for pump..GOLDEN!!! Now I am pretty sure she crapped out, but I am going to buy a new relay just to see..Maybe oil pressuree unit is gone completely also!!! Give me your input on this and oh yeah...Sounds stupid, but Can you put an external fuel pump down stream of a broke internal???? Or has anyone cut a hole right above the internal pump to gain access??

Ya, I had the same problem, only thing is your pump is in-tank. Thats gonna be a b*tch! I was a little luckier and mine's on the front of the block. But I was cruising with my friend at about 70 mph and the damn thing just dies, completely. NO POWER! Freaked me out. Cops cam and tried to tell me it was the alternator. TaRdS! Lol. but ya, got it fixed and that was it, for now... Who knows whats instore for the near future! Good luck bro!

Well I get in the car last night at around 11:00 and turn the key to on....To my surprise, the fuel pump primed up!!!! Still will not fire up though. Does this happen alot??? Does the fuel pump give warning when it goes??? All I know is that the damn thing is priming now!!!!

This happened to me so many times with my 88 TBI it's incredible.. I must have dropped my tank at least four times. Good thing Autozone has a lifetime warranty Fuel pump, but it still sucks about having to drop the tank. Mine went about every year for four years. I changed my mind the last time and dropped the tank and pulled out the Fuel Sending unit and took the whole thing up to a radiator shop. Had them measure the sending unit from end to end. take the pump off and weld on just a tube that went down to the bottom. Then i went to autozone and picked up a filter that would connect to the end of the tube. I dropped the fuel sending unit back in and hooked it up and bolted the Tank back up for the last time. I then ordered a Holley Universal Inline Fuel Pump. It looks just like the one in the tank only it has a hard epoxy outer shell and it makes a little more noise. Next Time I would choose the lesser of the two Universal Inline fuel pumps, Maybe the lesser doesn't make so much noise. (sounds like a blow dryer under my car) I then took a piece out of the fuel line and put in the included filter and then the pump. stripped back the wires from the sending unit to the pump and hooked it up. Problem fixed. and if I ever need to change that pump. All I have to do is unconnect two fittings of and the ends of the pump and two spade electrical connectors, and un bolt the thing. For me it was the most practical solution. Plus if your going high horsepower, you can benefit from a better fuel pump. I Plan on doing the same sometime soon to my 86, but the pump hasn't gone out yet..

When mine have gone out it's while the car has been running. You let the pump "cool" down a while and it should start up or prime fine. But that will only last so long.......

Has anyone gotten to it without dropping the tank (cutting a hole for access) and like I said "will I have to remove old pump to use an external pump"

My friend cut the sheet metal above the gas tank in the storage area and bent everything back, it wasn't pretty at all, but I suppose if nobody knows about it.......
I have to replace mine, but I wouldn't cut it, good place to have rust start.

whoops, sorry forgot to mention that I ran an external while I left my stock one in place, just another restriction on the external fuel pump. (Mine was a stock 305 w/ a carb that had a stock intake pump and one on the block) I ran an external electric pump when I had a 385 w/ a weiand 144. So for fuel injection I'm not entirely sure....
