fuel problem ?,help please

I have an 89 GTA Trans am 350 tpi.
The car will not start when it's cold or warm.If I spray a small amount of starting fluid in the throttle body it starts right up,idles fine and runs perfect.I tested the fuel pressure this morning and when I turn the ignition on the fuel pressure read 32 lbs and when I started cranking the motor over it dropped below 15lbs.when the car starts with starting fluid,I have to give it gas once or it will stall.Once I give it gas once the car idles and holds fuel pressure at 50psi.The car runs and idles great other than the starting problem.Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks
Roger

Re: fuel problem ?,help please

I've had lots of problems with my fuel system and this sounds different than anything I have experienced. It sounds like maybe the fuel pump doesn't prime the system before starting like it should and that the pump only kicks on when the car is running. By the way, giving the car "gas" is a little misleading, as you are really opening the throttle blades and giving the car more air.

If this were your pump, filter, fuel pressure regulator, or injectors, then you would have a lot of drivability issues.

I've never experienced this before either, could it be the fuel pump relay or the computer ?Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

you are reading 32 lbs, when you click the key on? that sounds a bit low. and when you drive it there are no problems at all? ususally if its a pump problem you will have prolems all the time or you will hear it whining.
