found a turbo 400

ok so i went to a few transmission shops.. best deal by far.

rebuilt TH 400 w/ shift kit and deep pan w/ converter for $780 (with tax) CDN. 1 year warantee.

i went to another shop. the guy said $900 + tax for a stock rebuilt TH 400, no shift kit or anything. so id have to buy a converter + the tranny.. adds up to $1300-$1400

only deal with the first guy is i have to give him a transmission, any core, doesnt have to work or not. so im gonna check out school and see if my shop teacher will give me an old one thats been there for 5 years or sell me one for dirt cheap.

now all i have to worry about is my rear end.. i have a 10 bolt i beleive, open diff.

should i goto the wreckers and find a 12 bolt from a chevy truck or what?

this is all gonna hook up to my 454

Keep the 10 bolt until you break it then find something to replace it. A truck 12 bolt is not the same as a car 12 bolt. A truck 12 bolt is also very wide. You'll also need to find some way of attaching the torque arm onto any non third/fourth gen differential. It's cheaper to just buy an aftermarket bolt-in housing for your car then stuff it will of the parts you want. Posi, gears etc.

Do either of the TH400's come with the slip yoke? If not then you'll need one. The TH400 is the only GM tranny with a large diameter slip yoke. No other GM yoke will work. You'll also need a swap kit to install the tranny.

What's the stall and size of the converter. A stock converter is cheap and should usually be given away. You'll probably want to change it to one with more stall anyway so you're still going to spend the extra money.

I personally know a couple of guys running 10 bolts and autos and pull 1.55-1.57 short times on ET Drags with great success. Like stated, wait until it blows to replace...
(The guy with the 1.55 runs 11.03's on a stock rotation ***'y, Hooker LT's, shift kit, subframes connectors, cam and 175 shot of dope and repeatly narrowly misses 10's...on a full weight Camaro w/stereo and spare...)
