found a 350!
found a 350!
i found an 84 350 4bolt main.. about damn time, all for $250 CDN.. its never been rebuilt, has stock bore.
im just figuring out what i wanna do to the motor.. i wanna get some raw power, i wanna get 400-500 RWHP...
i only have $2,000 CDN right now.. i am trying to get another job so I can flow the money into it. im in grade 12, taking two mechanics courses.. so i'll have all the time and tools, we get pretty good rates at the machine shop..
and out shop teacher is a really good mechanic (20 + years experiance).. plus he drag races, his motor of choice is the 440 hemi..
so what would you guys recomend to do?

save your money and when you get about 9,000 to put into the car then do it.
figure on a good chunk going to the engine itself then all the necessary accessories to make it work. the most expensive part is being able to make it all work and work smoothly.
the engine's the easiest part.

You better find another shop teacher because there is no such thing as a 440 Hemi. I raced Mopars for 20 years and the 440 is a magnum or a supercomando engine. That was the high performance 440 engines. The Hemi is a 426 cid from the factory. They had a race and street version. Maybe he was testing you.
What makes a Hemi is the cyl head. That is were the name Hemi came from ie Hemi head. I have never heard of anyone making a Hemi head for the 440. Unless he is doing some kink of bore on the Hemi to produce 440 cid. I never heard of anyone doing that cid on a Hemi. Hopes that helps.

The answer to that will dictate what comes next.
i wasnt 100% sure what he gots.. he's got alot of his motors lying around the shop.. some 440s, 400s.. 426
anyways, i want to have this as a daily driver.. but id also like to take it to the strip here and there.. id likve to be hitting 12s in the 1/4 mile.. 11s would be nice

Forget it. 500 hp is an unliveable collection of parts for a daily driver small block. Since you have only $2000 Canadian you have to be VERY frugal in your plans.
Sit down with a sharp pencil and find out how much it will cost to have the short block rebuilt to a simple 9:1 compression ratio spec. You say you can get a deal.
Bring us your result.

I`am having a 383 built hoping for 400hp
well my bottem end just the crank rods pistons cost $3000 by the time I `m done I`ll be 7000-8000 into the engine and thats for 400hp man you americans are so lucky you could build my engine for 1/2 of what I have to pay
AFR 195`s cost 2200 for the pair
oh and I konw a guy that has a 302ci 69 Z28 running 600hp and its daily driven in the summer

if you can build a good reliable 383 for half of 7 or even 8 you let me know because i've never heard of it.
good heads costing at least 1,000 with a good crank up there as well and then some nice pistons and your already at half. then all the machining and every other nickel and dime? and that's just the bottom end.
building an engine and doing it right is expensive any way you figure.

Looking to make some serious power from a 350 core.. It will be hard.. First off, the block you got is probably not as strong as a 2 bolt but none the less you have already bought it.. Real Power.. Here ya go.. Bore it over .060, get a 400 (3.75 Stroke) crank and turn it into a 388.. Now get some 6 inch rods for quicker accleration, Get some heads.. Like World Products Motown Heads Something with a 200 or 220CC Intake Runner length This thing will need some air.. Hydraulic Roller lifters, Call Crower tell them what your doing and they will help you pick a real Cam.. Port match, Maybe some pocket Porting.. You won't be able to use TPI It would kill your engine.. Mini ram or Pro Ram, or Stealth Ram would be better.. If you plan on using boost or NOS tell the guys at Crower for your cam.. Don't get a high volume or high pressure oil pump they rob power.. Just get a good Stocker.. Have the block flashing ground down around oil holes and water jackets.. Do it right you should make around 400-500 HP and 450-550 Trq..
I'm Currently Building a 427..
Dart Little M Block with 350 mains = 1600
World Products Motown 220 Alum Heads = 800
GM 4340 Forged 3.875 stroke 350 Mains = 500
GM 4340 Forged 6" H Beam Rods = 400
Wiseco Custom Forged 20cc Dished Pistons for 6" rods 8.5:1Comp = 600
Crower Custom Cam = 250
Accel MPFI Intake = 400
Plenum Adapter = 250
TB = 400
Sub Total = 5200
I still have to add in Gaskets, Machining, Oil Pump, Oil Pan, Valve Covers, Push Rods, Lifters, Gear Drive or Double Roller.. It's at the Machine Shop now.. I will have a pretty big bill when he's done probably.. It costs money to go fast.. but I'm hoping for around 550-650hp Probably closer to 550 but well see.. After one season of summer driving, have to get the procharger and the Gear Vendor Overdrive then it should be done...

GUYS!!!
He only has $2000 Canadian
If he can get all of his machine work done for cost where he goes to school, then he can get a roughly 300 to 350 hp engine. Otherwise he will not have enough cash to achieve his goal, period.
He will have to port and polish a set of Chevy heads himself to fit this together, money-wise. And also find a relatively inexpensive flat tappet cam, and used 4 bbl intake, too.
Exotic parts are just out of the question.

my 383 parts list so far
350 4bolt $30 great deal on the block
Scat cast steel 3.75" crank
Scat forged rod 5.7"
KB hyperutectic pistons =
$3000
AFR 195`s $2200
Team G intake $400
Holley 750 carb $500
Roller cam $1200 ( I`ll probly go flat tappet)
1.5 roller rockers $1000
$5300
oh well now I`m at about 9000- 10000 for my engine you guys could go forged for that
So smokey 2000 is not going to cut itif the 350 has a good bottem end you could build a nice 300hp 350 at lest you have a 4 bolt you can go pretty wild with that block later
