Re: exhaust manifolds get RED HOT!

Sounds like you may have a bad head gasket. Water is getting leaked through to the compression chamber and burned off. Time for an upper end rebuild, and if you keep driving it like this you will kill the bottom end as well..

to me it sounds like timing.

I think that the Cat converter is plugging up. You might want to drill a hole before the converter to see if you have a lot of pressure coming out of the hole. If so just cut it out and replace with a pipe if you don't have emmissons check where you live.

Sounds to me like the car is running really lean. The less fuel u have, the more your combustion temps raise. I have an LT1 and I have read about this happening quit often.

Re: exhaust manifolds get RED HOT!

I dont think it is that the car is merely running lean. This went through my head also, but was negated by the fact it is only happening on one side.. I've seen it before, you may have a blown head gasket and are losing coolant, thus you are overheating... Run a compression test, I would be willing to bet at least one of your cylinders is low on compression.. If so, head gasket.. Either way, stop driving it until you figure it out.

Re: exhaust manifolds get RED HOT!

The basic thing to realize here is that obviously the combustion temperatures are WAY too high. I am not too familiar with the fuel injection set-up on your motor, how many injectors do u have??

Re: exhaust manifolds get RED HOT!

my engine temp it self if fine and has never overheated... also my coolant is fine and isnt leaking... alot of people say its the timing i think im going to get that checked out first... thanks for the help

Re: exhaust manifolds get RED HOT!

The left side of your engine is the side without an Oxygen sensor. If it was a timing issue then the right side of your motor would glow too. However since timing is a static variable, and fuel delivery is not, I would check the fuel injectors or fuel rails for blockages on that side of the motor. Or a head gasket. You have to rule out all possibilities and pay no attention to the things that won't cause the problem. If it was timing, the whole motor would have the headers glowing, not just 1 side. Unless you have some weird dual distributor setup

Re: exhaust manifolds get RED HOT!

I am willing to bet that whatever supplies that side of the engine with fuel is malfunctioning and causing a lean condition.

Re: exhaust manifolds get RED HOT!

its running lean on that bank of cylinders.

w/ the car running, put ur fingure on each injector and see if u can feel the pulse for each one on that side. if u can, they might need to be cleaned/replaced.

if u cant hear/feel the pulse, check to see if their gettin power.

both have glowed before, way before it runs like it does now.... i know the right does get hot but i dont think it does as fast... think im going to get it looked at... really not sure on how to do some of the things you guys have mention on here... with the injecters and fuel rail etc... thanks for the help tho
