engine cutting off
engine cutting off
i have an 86 iroc-z 305 tpi.. i replaced the head gaskets a while back but i dont think this is causeing the problem.. any way,i start the engine and it runs fine when its cold but after its warmed up it runs like crap... well it usually only cuts off as soon as you try to put it in gear...it does put out sum black smoke and smell horrible as if it dumping to much fuel in... i think the computer thinks the engine is cold... i was told it could be the temp sensor and that it was also the torqe converter... my trany leaks tooo..
any ideas, any advice woul be greatly appreciated...the car has been sittin for a year now and i want to put her back on the road..

Do you have access to a scantool? If so, life gets much easier. I would check the Throttle Body. Take it off and clean it out. Also check the Idle Air Control housing. Take the IAC motor out, followed by removing the housing and cleaning it out. Drive the car for a bit and see if the problem goes away
Run the car till it gets to operating temp. Shut it down. Short the A & B terminals of the ALDL and turn the key to run position and leave it for at least 30 seconds. Turn it off. Remove the plug at the IAC and remove the short. Run the car. You may have to give it gas. Slowly let off the gas and see what RPM you are at. It should barely be running. Use a 3mm hex key to adjust the throttle screw till it does. While it is running, check the TPS voltage. It should be around 0.54V. Connect the IAC plug and see if it goes away.
With a scantool, look for the IAC counts. it should be around 20 - 30 counts. Adjust the throttle screw until it gets there.
