Re: DO you need a charcoal canister
the charcoal canister does not reduce horsepower in anyway
gasoline likes to evaporate, whether its in your fuel bowl, or your gas tank
and waste not want not right?
all the vents from the fuel bowl and gas tank are directed so the gasoline has to pass through the charcoal canister, the gasoline combines with the charcoal so it doesnt escape, and at the desired time it is vented back into the engine
if u want to remove the charcoal cansiter, then the fuel lines would be vented to atmophere, and if u drive the car rarely, you'll lose alot of gasoline and ur not even burning it!
so plug the vents? NO!
because then you would pressurize the fuel and you would have plenty of vapor lock
leave the canister it does no harm, doesnt weigh anything

Re: DO you need a charcoal canister
ok that solves the tank problem,
what about the carburator?
if it is carb'd
if its fuel injected, no problem
if its carb'd, the carb depends on atmospheric pressure to create the difference in pressure that allows the gas to enter the intake manifold
btw where are u getting your vented cap?
i've been looking for one to solve my venting problem but autozone says there isnt one for my 3rd gen

Re: DO you need a charcoal canister
i dunno where im getting one, but i need to find one, and mine is on my fuel injection 4th gen..
would it work to just drill a hole in the top of the gas cap?

Re: DO you need a charcoal canister
I've got a non-CC Q-jet on my car, and the fuel vent line has been removed, along with the canister. I haven't noticed any trouble with the 400 gettin' fuel.....

Re: DO you need a charcoal canister
if u drilled a hole in your gas cap, why have a gas cap at all?, it really does defeat the purpose
i've only tried autozone for my 3rd gen
4th gens do have a different tank (plastic)
so you may have more options than me

Re: DO you need a charcoal canister
Does anyone know of another vehicle that has a smaller canister? I seem to remember hearing about 4thgens or s10s having them smaller mounted on top of the gastank itself or something? Seems like it'd be easy to mount somewhere near the bottom of the car and keep it along with the purge... ala no codes?

Re: DO you need a charcoal canister
1. Vented gas caps are available for our cars. Stant makes 2 caps, 11823 is the correct non-vented cap, and 11822 is the vented cap.
2. Removing the charcoal canister and installing a canister type fuel filter on the vent line is a common practice, and works quite well. I have this on my car and have no noticable fumes from the filter outlet.
3. It will not set a check engine light, either canister removal or venting the tank. Only later OBDII cars got the EVAP monitors.
4. Sun Oil did a study on how much gasoline evaporates from a car with a removed cap over a period of a year. They measured just under 22 gallons in a year. That's less than a half gallon per week.
