degreeing a cam

degreeing a cam

how important is it to degree a cam or can you just line it up and throw it in.

ive heard of people putting cams in their cars and actually loosing horsepower because the cam is so out of whack! if i were to put a cam in my car i would def. degree it.

I would degree it just to be safe.

Fortunately, my cam was machined correctly...and matched right up with the specs when I degreed it.

Not necessarily hard to degree, but it would be a pain with the motor inside the car.

You'll need your valve covers off, and your timing cover (obviously).

I have found good qulaity timing chains to be +- 1* in almost all cases. Good means it costs more than $50.

However, I have found in just one case that the dot was off by one tooth on the timing gear. Oops. It'll run like crap like that, obviously. And without degreeing it you'll never know that it's off.

99% of the time it'll be VERY close to spec without degreeing it. However, that 1% of the time will make you wish you had spent the time to degree it.
