Condensation in air filter

Hi guys
My friend has this problem on his 89 Camaro. We opened up air filter to check if its any good and it was all moist and smelled a little bit like gasoline and it was dripping wet... Does anyone knows what a problem could be?

Thanks

You need to give up a little more information. Which engine, carb or injected, modified or stock.

I've seen where gas tanks built up pressure (bad cap) and it ended up pushing pressure back towards carbs and you get gas smell on filter. Defective evacuation system can also do that, e.g. vapor cannister. If he had winter gas in it and weather has been warm in your area, this would cause percolation and aggravate the problem.

As far as the wetness, presuming it was water, does he have some type of ram air? Air intake system go by the radiator and maybe picking up moisture off a radiator leak and it accumulates in the filter?

Do a compression test on each of the cylinders.

You think one of them doesnt work properly? How much would it cost to do compression test?

It's not alot at all. See if you can't rent a compression tester from autozone or whatever. Then, do it yourself. Get a book for the car, or findout somehow how much psi each cylinder is suppose to have. Disconnect the distributor so the car wont start, remove a spark plug, screw in the tester fitting, then have someone crank the engine over. Watch the gauge. The compression should build up quickly. If I remember correctly no cylinder should be more than 10 psi over/under from the others. If the compression builds slowly, pour about a tablespoon of motor oil into the spark plug hole, and then try again. If the compression builds quickly, then you got worn rings. Repeat this procedure for all cylinders, recording each cylinders psi.
