charcoal canister

I read some were that the charcole canister is not activated until the EGR is open. Is this true?

Case being, I've installed a miniram on my new motor and it does not have previsions for an EGR. I've also taken out the air pump and PCV system. Basically the only emission stuff I'd be running to help during testing would be the CAT, O2, and the charcle Canister.

Thanks!

You need to post this on either "3rd Gen Tech", or on the "Computer..... " forum to increase the chances of a response. From watching the EGR and EEC systems on a scanner in my 4th Gen, they appear to be independant systems. But I have no idea how the 4th Gen strategy compares to the 3rd Gen strategy.

Moving to 3rd Gen Tech....

According to my 87 GM Service Manual, the solenoid valve can be turned off and allow purging of the vapors into the intake when:

1: Engine is warm

2: After the engine has been running a specified time

3: Above a specified road speed

4: Above a specified throttle opening

It appears to be a seperate system from the EGR since no mentioning of the EGR system is in this section. This little charcoal canister can cause quite a many problems, including poor idle and stalling, fuel loss and/or fuel vapor smell from engine compartment.
