To carb or not to carb....

K, I'm buying a forged 383 stroker motor from oil pan to heads. No intake. I have a HSR, 38# injectors, t-rex inline fuel pump, BBK 58mm TB, and a Compucar wet kit w/ nozzle.
Now my buddies are trying to get me to go carbed. If I sell my 355 short block that I already have, I should be able to get a custom prom and gaskets/ whatnot that I need to finish the install. I also still need a 700r4 converter.
Problem is, I know nothin' about carbs. My buddy said that's ok, he does, and he'd tune it for me. Which way would you guys go???

well since you already have the HSR go for it. but if you were looking to make the decision first time around, nothing beats carbs for cheap performance.

I love carbs for their simplicity, adaptability to many different engines and, of course, their low cost. If you didn't already own 90% of the FI stuff you need I would have said go carb. But you're too close on the FI stuff to bag out of that now.

carbs are great, and easy, but u have all the fuel injection stuff, and fuel injection is so much better

Re: To carb or not to carb....

Another vote for EFI - the ONLY reason to go with a carb is if you just can't afford fuel injection... Other than that, I pretty much agree with the last 2 responses...

Re: To carb or not to carb....

I have the best of both worlds, my camaro is a bolt on LT1. And i have a 91 formula w/ a 355 and a holley 750 dp. I like the carb for the cost and simplicity to tune, but I also like my LT1 for reliability and throttle response.

I agree 100%. You have to many of the much needed essentials for FI. Tell your buddy that wants you to go carb'd to buy that 355 off of you .

Re: To carb or not to carb....

The big difference between fi and carbs is that fi is for street use, it was built to control emissions by constanly adjusting the air/fuel ratio, and carbs are for racing. this is why you never see fi on a drag strip in a real drag car. fi is too unreliable on the drag strip with all the sensors and complicity of the system. with carbs the racer can set the wide open air/fuel ratio to exactly where he wants it and if something goes wrong with the carb it can be unbolted by 4 bolts and a new one put on.

Seriously - you actually intended to post that in this thread, right?
