car cuts out
well the problem is that when i drive the car and am accelerating the car will just shut off.sometimes it starts running again and sometimes it dont.when it wont start back up, it is very hard to start.it will carnk over but die right away and sometimes it acts like its not getting any fuel when you start it after it dies out but it has plenty of fuel pressure.today it wouldnt start so i went out and got a ignition module and installed it and it started up but really havent drivin it yet.i get a weird smell in the car when it dies and im trying to start it back up,like a fuel smell.its getting annoying cause its my daily driver and i need it to get back and forth to school.any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated. sorry so long.
You might not like it but here goes. I would buy a fuel pressure gauge and tape it to the glass and make several runs and see what happens. Just because it is getting fuel doesn't mean it is getting enough. It could be your pump cutting out. Without a gauge you will never know. You have air, therefore the only 2 problems left are spark and fuel. It is rare but if your ECM is faulty, it might not be giving the injectors the proper pulses to send the fuel into the cylinders. Also, when it happens and doesn't want to restart, remove the wire from the coil to distributor and stick a spark plug that is grounded and see if it gives a steady stream of sparks. By the way, how are your wires. Run the car at night in the garage and use a spray bottle to spray around the plug wires and see if you see it light up. If so, replace the wires.
Mine did something similar, turned out to be the distributor. The module was good, the pickup coil was good, but the star-shaped magnet was all cracked up. I dropped in a replacement from Advance Auto for $99 which came with a new module, problem solved!
PS; I was able to pull the distributor out of my '88 Suburban and drop it in the 90ROC to test it, which it fired right up quickly and ran flawlessly. Test yours first like I did if you can...

WELL I DROVE IT TODAY AND AROUND 3500 RPM IT BACKFIRES LIKE A 12 GAUGE WENT OFF IN MY EAR. I HAVE A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE ON MY HOOD AND THERE IS A CONSISTANT 42 LBS.SO I GUESS ILL TRY TO GET A DISTRIBUTER OFF A BUDDY OF MINE AND SEE IF IT WORKS.THANKS GUYS
Does the car absolutely refuse to rev past 3500? I have had a problem in the past with my MAF sensor connection screwing up on me. My car is originally a 87 tpi car aswell, and when the connection would go bad the car was almost impossible to keep running, and certainly impossible to rev up past 3000 rpm's or so. I would be driving along thinking about sunshine and loly'pops and suddenly "stumble" "stumble" and the car would not rev and eventually die. If this sounds like a possiblity, start by waiting till the symptoms arrise again, then pop the hood and give the pig tail connector that goes in to the MAF sensor a wiggle and even unplug it an re-plug it in, and see if the problem disapears. If it does not, keep a wacking tool handy, and give the MAF a little tap and then try again. If you had the same problems as I did I am pretty sure that it is the connection, but MAF's do go, and yes they can cause these exact problems as well. Good luck.
