Big Block Street Project

Im building a 402 big block for a 92 camaro rs that has a V6 in it right now. Im building it to be a daily driver with a real nice amount of power so I want to save on gas. What transmission should I run with this and could I possibly find a fuel injection kit that would fit this?

big block and "save gas" should not be used in the same sentence. get a 3.8 and turbo it.

The cost of a fuel injection system will be paid for with gas savings in about 50 years! Seriously though, why the 402? Why not a small block? That's such a "small big block" that the extra weight and bulk are not justified, IMHO.

The reason why Im building this big block is because I already have a block with machine work done and some 427/425 horse heads and also paying for school so this is what I have to work with. I had a 388 small block I was going to build but had to sell to pay for school and I was given the 402 and heads

Get CPT transmissions to build you a 700r4 trans for it...overdrive will help the gas mileage.

You could do a Megasquirt type budget EFI deal with a 4 hole style throttlebody.....that would be pretty cool.

Or find a 454 SS or 454 Dually throttlebody setup out of a junkyard.

if you want fuel mileage you can try to get a tbi injection system off the 454 ss trucks. You still wont get anything "great" thats for sure. A victor efi intake with a 4150 flange TB will be another option.

EFI is not going to pay for itself in gas savings compared to a well tuned carb. Don't get me wrong, I love EFI and even have it on my alcohol bracket car. But it is not realistic to do it on a project like this if the goal is to save on gas. Also, if you know carbs but not EFI, it's going to be a lot easier tuning a carb.

I agree You could get away with a Pro Systems built Holley 780cfm for $600-700 and buy an Innovate LM1 Wideband setup so you can see the tune in real time. And to be honest, Pat at pro-systems can set the carb up and 99% of the time it's dead nuts on. No changes needed at idle, cruise, or wide open. A low intake like a Vic jr. will allow the carb to fit under a stock hood. You would need a drop base air cleaner also.

A 700R4 will work perfect for a street going cruiser.

I was thinking the same...Well tuned carb more cost effective than efi but somebody had an efi system from a 454 that came out of a truck. And I also thought about an 850 on top of an Air gap. But a built 780 on top of a victor jr. sounds even better. Thanks for the help everyone

Just what I was thinking. I'm looking into a Megasquirt also. I had these guys build me a 700R. The one I got is good for 550hp but they make them at higher hp ratings. Click on "products" not "find my trans" on the main page http://www.outlawtransmissions.com/
