alternator current baseline

okay i recently had a problem with my battery where it started leaking at the terminal and im wondering if my car is to blame at all. I was told the only reason my car could be to blame for it is if my charging system was over charging the battery? Regardless id like to check my charging system i have a multimeter what setting should i put it on and what baseline should i look for coming off of the alternator? I more or less have the alt. wire spliced into the main wire but i can easily remove the alt wire so is that where i should test for how much current its putting out? I dont see that being safe so is there a better way to do it. Basically step by step how do i check the current coming off of my alt with a multimeter remembering im stupid as **** when it comes to dealing with electricity and what should i look for as a base line as to how much power is coming off of it. thx for the help guys.

The alternator puts out way too much current for a regular multimeter. Unless you have a high-amp-capacity meter you'll have to go by the voltage. Crank her up and check the voltage across the battery terminals. If it's more than 14.5 or 15, you're overcharging.

That's what most cars charge at.
