700R4 manual valve body or shift kit?
700R4 manual valve body or shift kit?
Plan on rebuilding a 700R4 with TCI race clutches and a 2800 stall lockup converter. I was wondering what valve body I should go with: either a TCI manual valve body with engine braking or just do a shift kit. What do you guys think? the tranny will be used as a daily driver, will a manual valve body be too harsh on a tranny?
Use the modified Trans-Go Perfromance Shift kit, this will give you nice part throttle (no-bang) shifts, while still giving firm WOT shifts. This kit will allow you to manually shift it when you want, or just leave it in Drive or Overdrive for normal driving. I would substitute the TCI 3-4 clutches & 2-4 band for Borg Warner Hi-Energy 3-4 clutches & 2-4 band, they will give better overall shifts and last longer, and cost less. If you have any questions, let me know?
Thanks for the advice, a few more questions if you don't mind. Will I be able to downshift and have engine braking with the kit? and when upshifting is it instant or does it have that 1-2 second delay after I shift?
Mine is set up to shift hard at all times. I could have it set to shift hard at WOT only but I wanted it all the time. Going slow and going into 2 from 1, there is a definate jerk but that is me. Supposedly, it helps the tranny to last longer. I had mine calibrated to shift at 6100 during WOT or normal rpm.
With this kit, the part throttle shifts are quick, and WOT shifts should have no delay, if there is it usually is the force motor. Some have removed the force motor and replaced it with the Trans-Go vacuum modulator, which gives "instant" response on down shifts.
