The most powerful 454 (the LS6) put out 450 horsepower and 500 lbs/ft of torque by the optimistic, old, "gross" horsepower measurement.

That motor had solid lifter from the factory as well as a 850 cfm carb...It was rated that low solely b/c insurance companies were starting to crack down and they went by HP ratings on cars like that. My BBC that was on my 79 Z had HYDRAULIC lifters,LESS CAM, and the same size carb and had around 500HP easy to push that sled to 11.0X in the 1/4 everytime down the track.

LMAO. Find me a SBC car w/ a flat tappet cam, runs on 93,has FACTORY heads that runs 11 flat/7.0's in the 1/8 in a 3400 car. YOU WONT !!

And dont go find some LSX motor w/ some huge camshaft and milled heads call it stock.

We're also not talking about drag motors in classic cars, we're talking about a production motor in 2010. I like BBCs as much as the next car but they just don't make sense anymore as far as weight and size are concerned. The new Camaro is already supposed to weigh what, 3800lbs?

By the way, if you want to go fast for cheap than SBC + supercharger or N2O will beat your BBC any day in the HP per $ competition.

I love BBs as much as anyone else on here, but you gotta be realistic too. Theres not much chance of a BB fitting under the hood of a modern production car, still weigh under 4000 lbs, etc.

I still think a big inch LSX would be the best choice, we all know that GM has the capability to do that.

Would not suggest a big block----very impractical and just absolute for the market. However, can you imagine that mean exhaust sound in that bad boy!!!!!!!!! Scary shXX.

As long as it fits in the engine bay.

What kind of fuel mileage does that BBC get?

Perhaps you missed the HP per $ part. Besides packaging concerns for a given power goal it's going to be cheaper to go with the SBC.

There is a range (somewhere between 500-700hp) that a BBC has the advantage. You don't need forced induction and factory parts with after market heads can make the power you need. Above and below that though, you can't beat an SBC.
