If big blocks are heavy then put some aluminum manifolds or something to make it lighter!!!

Noooo.....big blocks are REALLY heavy. With all the CAFE/tree-hugger concerns, big blocks are a thing of the past.

Its been 35 years since you could order a big block Camaro. It won't happen.
I know its a small block based on external dimensions, perhaps I should have added displacement wise, as of late, it seems engine builders have been able to swing some really big strokes to get some hefty increases in displacement.

The LSx engines, Fords Windor engines (up to 460 cubic inches last time I looked), and whatever Chrysler has been able to do.

It almost seems with the advances in airflow technology that having a "real" bigblock (unless your striving for some really big displacements) is almost pointless.

Yes. In fact they can make a 500+ cubic inch small block.

A lot of you are comparing the old factory BBC with the Gen III small blocks, just not a fair comparison. Given the same level of technology there is no way a 454 small block can make the same kind of power as a 454 big block. You can only make so much power with 4.4" bore spacing.

The big limit in SBCs is and always has been cylinder head technology. If you can't feed the 427ci+ then there is no sense in having them. BBCs are not limited in cylinder head technology, take the new Dart "Big Chief" heads, if you want a 600ci motor you can feed it.

I'd love to see a BBC in the camaro, but the packaging is just too much. I would like to see GM abandon the old 4.4" bore spacing in favor of something a little bit more substantial though. Then we would see some decent head technology to feed some of these big cube beasts.

The 8.1 in the trucks that was recently discontinued was considered a big block.
I didnt know this, I cant believe GM doesnt make a big block anymore, I loved the 8.1 in my parents dually, plenty of power, too bad it got 12 mpg on a good day! I was hoping GM woulda came back with the half ton SS with an 8.1

500+ inch tall deck LSX block for the stipped down drag version would be nice.

GM is still short a crank with a 4.5" stroke and heads that wouldn't choke a motor that size.

an even better idea would be to increase the bore centers to the same 4.5" as the R07

Great minds think alike.

They could get all crazy with that 3 valve patent they got. I could see a cylinderhead flowing in the 4XX zone, plenty for a big inch smallblock street motor.
