For those of you planning on buying the V8..

..will you still buy if gas is consistently above $4 when the car comes out? I would be using mine as my daily driver, but I am going to have a gut wrenching decision if order time comes and there is no active fuel management and gas is $4+ (which it almost positively will be). I guess MPG still might not be HORRIBLE if they manage to get the car out at a decent weight.. which is possible considering how small the pre-prod appears in pictures.

But then again, since this will most likely be the final generation of the true V8 Camaro, it would be almost a sin not to just go ahead and take it in the wallet.

I'm not going to worry about it too much. I tend to be a pretty thrifty guy in my everyday life, so if I go all out on my vehicles its not usually a big deal. Also I have a very short commute to work for the time being, and I don't plan on becoming a cookie-cutter-house dwelling suburbanite anytime soon. A 50 mile per day work commute would maybe make me consider finding a beater 4-banger daily driver though.

Mine will be a Sunday driver in the Summer and stored in the Winter. Not too worried about the gas for it. However my wife drives a minivan that gets about 18 mpg in the city and it is starting to hurt a little. I really hope we start seeing some hybrid tech cars in the minivan market soon.

I assume you mean the GT / R/T fighter not the top dog.

I plan to get a convertible GT / R/T fighter, and the gas price & mileage are not nearly as important to me as the test drive and the final interior. I do plan to move and maybe switch jobs by the time the 'vert ships, so maybe the gas will matter more.

I think that GM is putting a lot of work into mileage so you can expect to get more than the G8 GT's 15/23. That might mean a slightly hotter L76 that shuts itself off at stop lights, or it could mean that the base V8 is a turbo v6.
The Camaro could be a lot lighter than the G8. But I think getting below 3700 would just cost too much.

I was going to say that the Camaro's mileage would probably be competitive with the Mustang's, but I just checked and the 08 Mustang GT gets the same 15/23 as the G8 GT even though the Mustang is smaller, lighter and down 62 HP. It is hard to believe that AFM and an extra gear in the tranny (6 vs 5) could make up for all that.

I'm not going to worry about it....it will be my weekend car. It will make more of an impact when I buy my next daily driver. I currently drive a Trailblazer which averages about 16-17mpg, so even if I did drive the Camaro every day, it would probably be better than the TB (biggest impact would be putting in 93octane all the time).

Yep gearing and aero count for alot and the AFM helps, in my 07 GT (M5 3.55) at 70 I'm nearly turning 2000 rpm.

A switch to the M6 with a .5 OD would lop 400 rpm off that - If Ford could get the gear spacing right with an M6 and put something like my old 5.0's 2.73 in there, that would drop another 500 more.

This makes me wonder though if we will see a forced return to the double nickle? In my car in 5th at 55 my instant fuel economy creeps right on up to around 29-30 mpg.

It won't make a difference to me. I'm planning on a V8 car (hopefully a Z/28). I'd love to see FlexFuel offered and I think there's a good chance after seeing the Holden Coupe 60 concept.

If $4 gas bothers you, you have no business buying a $30k+ car.

Well considering 30k (and there abouts in both directions) is pretty much the standard price for your average car these days, saying you can't afford 4 bucks a gallon pretty much points out that the middle class is dead in the US and I'm pretty sure the bulk of this site's membership falls in that range and by extension people who want to purchase a V8 Camaro.

Looking at mustangs, there is only a 1 to 2 mpg difference between V-6 and V-8.

I drive a 67 chevy that gets 12/15 (has a 700R4) and a silverado that averages 14-15/18-19 (depending on winter or summer blend fuel) so A camaro rated at 15-16/23-26??? would be awesome

I have a Yukon as a daily driver so it can't be any worse.

I want the new Camaro to get better mileage than my 98. I get 15-17 in the city, and 25-30 on the highway depending how I drive, so I'd expect at least that.

$4 gas doesn't scare me though It's just annoying to have to stop so often. A working gas gauge would be nice too..
