Possible first glimpse of new Camaro motor.
Possible first glimpse of new Camaro motor.
Quoted off of a thread from LS1 Tech:
Here is a picture of the head in question...this is maybe what I think Scott had in mind when we kept bugging him about engines on this car.

unveiled a 6.3-liter V8 with three overhead valves per cylinder (one exhaust, two
intakes) that makes 470 hp at 6700 rpm and 385 lb-ft at 5600 rpm. Engineer Fred
Rozario says the extra valve increases horsepower by 13 to 18 percent over a two-
valve engine.
Gm is not saying where we will see the engine, but the small block is ready to go and
could be adapted for car and truck applications.

Re: Possible first glimpse of new Camaro motor.
Apparently so...it very closely reminds me of the 3 valve design that Ford uses...with exception to two things #1 it doesn't have OHC, #2 it isn't pathetic and weak...there I have said it.
Re: Possible first glimpse of new Camaro motor.
whatever the V8 ends up being, I'm not worried. GM Powertrain will deliver the goods.
gotta admit though... a dilithium crystal hybrid would be interesting. I wonder if a young Dr Zefram Cochrane is on GM Powertrain's payroll.

... Just kidding. I get the reference.

I agree the HP numbers are high but the TQ seems to be lacking in relation to the over all HP. Knowing that the motor is turning some higher RPM makes me think it is going to be used in a performance application for a smaller lighter car...who knows maybe it will be the motor for the next monte carlo, or what ever.
One thing I know for sure, an LS7 (even if detuned and wet sumped), would be welcomed by all and would be an easy pick for an upper engine option. Know that GM is stepping forward however makes me think they will only do that motor for 2 years in the Vette and then move on, which seems like a shame and a waste of such an awesome powerplant.

Stars,
So do you think that the photos are of oneoff's or actual developmental heads from somewhere deep within the walls of GM?

Re: Possible first glimpse of new Camaro motor.
The double intake valve increases horsepower by 12-13%... not torque. Why be so upset about the numbers without seeing a torque/hp curve? 385 lb ft of toque is no slouch...
I agree with somebody, this engine seems more like a high-winding sports car engine made for a lighter car.
