Great Camaro write-up with new drawings.
Re: Great Camaro write-up with new drawings.
I see the statement
"The car guys in design and engineering demanded that this car happen, and that it be a truly modern interpretation of a Camaro. Some marketing people asked for more rear legroom and a larger trunk, and we said 'No.' We couldn't allow the idea to die on the vine or become something other than a true Camaro."
As a way to say they have not changed at all. It will be as unpractical (unusable) as ever. Making a decent size back seat and small trunk would have been good enough for me. We'll see when it comes out.

When I purchase a Camaro (I've had 3, and am to embarassed by my current vehicle to mention it) I'm not doing so for it's ability to cart around friends. As a 31 year old, unmarried male with no kids a back seat isn't a priority.
I understand there are a number of guys out there that have a family and need more room, but a car like this isn't intended to be used as a sedan would. If I wanted sedanlike room, I'd just get a Monte Carlo SS or something, but that's me.
When I used to drive friends around and they'd complain about the back seats I'd tell them I bought the car because _I_ like it and the driver's seat is comfortable. If they don't want to go they can step out of the vehicle. LOL Hell, I managed to get 8 people in my 1982 Berlinetta once. THAT was interesting...
Regarding the trunk... My 2002 Camaro's trunk (as well as my 1982 Berlinetta and 1991 RS) was more versatile than my current vehicle. Even more versatile than the trunk of my 1995 Cavalier I used to drive. The hatchback made it possible for me to carry many more things than I can in a traditional trunk. I'd much prefer seeing the new Camaro have a hatch style rear, but it's not a deal breaker by an means.
I actually carried an entire twin size bed (mattress and all - disassembled of course) in my 2002 Camaro with the hatch popped up a little. You can't do that in anything aside from a truck usually.
So the complaints over a 'usable' trunk are completely misplaced. IMO anyway.

I must admit the side-by-side pics really do show how different they are... though I still don't get that feeling unless I see the two actually side-by-side.
Also, I really like the front end styling of the red drawing so much better, even though it is so similar... I like the headlamps being "cut out" on the lower halves into the fascia... I think that was a nice design cue that didn't make the cut.

This is one of the best articles I've read on the 5th Gen-- AWESOME FIND, and thanks!
I'm still drooling at all those pics-- I wonder if any of them have hi-res counterparts?

Great article, thanks for the link. What's this "cowl-induction hood" baloney. Don't they mean "cowl-induction STYLE hood"? I'd really like true cowl induction instead of that little cold-air grill in front. But, maybe it will supply a little ram air effect at speed.

Also, something I thought when I watched the unveiling video.
(I could be wrong easily, I'm not as well informed of the whole car 'world' as everyone here.)
But, has there ever been as elaborate an unveiling of a 'concept' before? As I watched the band, then parade of Camaro's all I could think of was 'There's just too much fanfare for this to ONLY be a concept.'

Actually, it would work better than the forward facing scoops on the 4th gens...(the base of the windshield is a high pressure area....4th gen SS hoods were only good at high speeds, air rode up over them at highway speeds)...due to the routing required. Just use a pan gasket to the hood and flat filter similar to the 4th gens...we Pro-Tourer's have already figured that one out on our cowl hood with FI engines.
