Re: 5th gen engine ??

Are you serious? Displacement on demand, or active fuel management has been around for awhile now on GM engines. Stuff works just fine, invisible from what everyone says. I don't think Buick has ever had it since they haven't had a V8 since this stuff came out that I know of. Cadillac tried it in what, the early eighties with thier V8,6,4 but there wasn't enough development and technology and it flopped. It is going good now and isused in GM's truck engines. It would be great if this got into the Camaro for some serious highway mileage. Also, it is designed for highway cruising, not city traffic. You will still be running on all 8 cylinders most of the time.

Someone more knowledgeable want to clue this guy in on all the models/engines currently using AFM/DOD please?

basically your friend was right.. but there is no downside to the technology from what i hear..

better gas mileage while cruising.... un-noticeable switch to full power when needed..

If I could keep that damn right foot of mine OFF the pedal enough, DOD may actually be able to help me get better fuel economy one day?!

AFM is a completely seamless operation.
You don't even notice it when driving.

Go test drive an Impala SS or Monte Carlo SS, I bet you'll think it's neat.

I'd rather sound like a V-8 all the time. Hopefully it will have a turn off switch like traction control.

In the case of the Impala/Monte Carlo SSs... the cruising tone is the same, you can't tell by feel or sound when it switches.
I would surmise this to be true for all AFM engines.

Since it's a hydraulic control you could probably disable it with a simple steel checkball in the correct oil passage...

Could you also just program it out?
