ps pump wont stop whinning

ok so i put a power steering cooler on today. i routed the small line coming from the the rack and pinion into the cooler and then back to the resevior. i turned the car on and let the old fluid run out and poured new fluid into it while this was happening. i turned the wheels side to side and checked the level again. you know i bleed the system. onyl problem is now the ps pump wont stop whinning. it gets louder as i accelerate and it whinins while i turn. the fluid is full and ive done plenty of firgue eights to try and get the air out, but it still wont stop whinning. im using red line ps fluid and i did let the pump run dry momentarily while i tried ot get around the car and fill it up. so whats going on. why will it not stop whinning. thanks trey

If you put a restrictive cooler in line, the pump will starve for oil and whine like that. If you run the car like that for any significant length of time, you will be looking for a new PS pump. Don't ask how I know.

its a six pass tranny cooler. i wouldnt think its restrictive. all i did was continue to drive the car and ignore it. it finally stopped whinning. the pump is doing fine. ive been to several autox events and in the mountians a lot with it. many miles have been put on the car. i do need a new pump eventually though because it has a very small leak. still functions quiet well. i just preferre to have a clean engine.

That's what I used. I am planning on a new pump soon. Might be the Lapping at the Road Courses that killed mine along with the cooler. You can read all about the various issues on cooling the ps fluid here:

Thanks for the information guys.

I quess Turn One PS pump is coming; $200 is a lot but you get a brand new unit. I heard good things about the LS1 unit and I'm glad they make it for the LT1 now.

Cheers
