Rev limiter and reported rpm

Maybe someone here can help me out, or knows what is going on.

My rev limiter is set to 6130, but I did a data log a couple of days ago and during the 1-2 shift the log shows almost 6400 rpm. It never hit the limiter and shifted cleanly. So what's going on here?
It's a bit concerning to say the least!

Re: Rev limiter and reported rpm

Stock rev limiter is set at about 5,808 RPM, but varies slightly, depending which gear you are in. I know the M6 has the 5,808 RPM limit in 1st gear, and 5,886 RPM in all other gears. I think the A4 is the same. Note that the stock tach reads ~200-300 RPM higher than actual at high RPM.

I'm still puzzled by the OP's problem.

My tach is off by about 500 rpm at 6000!

and I kind of found out why this was happening, but don't know how it ended up that way. I pulled the tune from the car and the fuel cuttoff and resume were both set for 6169rpm. I looked at the bin that I had saved and it wasn't like that, so I either screwed up somewhere or who knows...

Re: Rev limiter and reported rpm

Thanks my z is not stock but close. it revs to about 6200 rpm sitting still and if your going about 20mph and go into passing gear it shifts out at the same about 6200 rpm then the same from 2nd into 3rd that why I was wondering if it was the same from idle to the other gears. I know it has a cam and a few other goodies but not sure of any specs......... not sure if it had (tuned) or things adjusted. thanks again

do you mean free revving?
Don't think that's good for your valve train to be free revving it that high.

I would hope that if it has a cam it's been tuned.
If you're using the factory tach to determine that it's hitting 6200rpm you may want to verify by other means.

Re: Rev limiter and reported rpm

only did it a couple times when I bought it because the person I bought it from said it was rebuilt with a few mode cam, mini starter new injectors etc etc. but he thought he would keep the car so he could not find the spec sheet for the cam... But he was not really (car smart)did not know if someone had (tuned) it or the new pistons had a higher compresson ratio things like that.
