I am buying new Heads, cams, headers.. WHICH DO I GET?

My car has about 146,000 and runs great but I have the extra money put back so I am ready to make this car a little more "noticeable" I have heard a couple newer model Mustangs around here that have done some big motor mods and they sound like a freakin Winston cup Car when they go by........ VERY RATTY and High pitched, hollow sound!!!!! Seeing how there are no Camaros like this around I turn to you guys for some advice!
I am basicly going to pull the motor. I plan on having it rebuilt but I plan on putting a much better cam, Ported Heads, and pretty much anything I can thing of and still keep the car streetable! Later on I plan on beefing up the rear end and I may go ahead and buy a new beefed up trans while I have it apart with a bigger stall etc.... SOOOOOOOOOO the million dollar question is What should I go with to achieve what I am trying to do here. I am just looking to get that awesome sound and maybe pull of a few low 12's high 11's runs down the track occasionally...... I have done a search but get really confused with all the people who chime in so I thought I would just start a new post and simply ask the pros WHAT TO BUY!!!!!!!! Just got whipped pretty bad by a 98 Cobra who had a couple mods and was spraying as well. I DON'T plan on that happening again after the mods are done!!!!!!!

There are a plethora of options out there.

I would suggest calling Seth @ Combination Motorsports. They have very good prices on everything you are looking for, and they are EXTREMELY knowledgeable about any setup you might want.

This could get expensive really quickly. Looking at your mods list, you will need a lot. Don't forget, you can't just slap in a cam and some heads and plan on running this through the stock exhaust setup. You are going to need headers, and a catback of some kind. You will also probably want to focus on suspension a little or you are going to be wasting all of that power. I figure, if I had some money to throw into a motor without going nuts, I would rebuild the bottom back to semi-stock, maybe upgraded pistons or something, but I would put on top of that some nice stage 2 heads and probably a 230/236 cam or maybe a bit smaller.

As of right now i have around $4500-$5000 to spend on my motor project. it was either this or a new street bike and to me thats a no brainer now I just want a car that when you pull up next to it at the red light you don't even want to mess with it after you hear a quick rev......... LOL I will have to spend a little more if I get into the rear end, trans, and such but right now thats my motor budget.

I think I read you were thinking of upgrading your stall conv, so I guess you're an A4 guy, in which case its not critical, but I would still start saving for that 12 bolt rear.

I figure, if you do the work yourself, you could get heads/cam/headers done for... (estimating conservatively)

$1500 fully assembled heads ported, etc
$300 comp cams pro mag rockers
$250 comp cams xe series cam (218/230, 224/230, 230/236, etc)
$200(?) new timing chain (assuming its not done with the rebuild)
$500 jet hot headers
$200 to have someone fab up a Y pipe

... on top of a rebuild.

The top end and headers would probably run you ~$2500-3000 or so?
