will this make a difference?

225 50 17 instead of 225 60 16? will the computer still react the same way compared to the original on the speedometer?
thanks

p.s. would this 44mm offset make a big difference compared to 54mm?

Will This(It) Matter?

As DiabloGt asked, would a larger diameter rear wheel/tire combo affect the computer, speedometer & engine controls? Like going from 16's to 17's or 18's. If so what equipment(brand & type) is needed to reprogram? Thanx in advance.

The error in the speedo will depend on the outside diameter of the tire. What size tires came on your car (they were either 235/55-16 = 26.18" or 245/50-16 = 25.65")? What diameter is programmed into your PCM?

225/50-17 = 25.86" diameter

225/60-16 = 26.63"

The 17 inch tires will make your speedo show a speed which is 3% higher than actual speed - IF your PCM/speedo was prorammed for the 16 tire you list. But whether is is right or wrong depends on what tires your car came with originally. The 225 tires were only used on the V6 cars. To me, they seem way too small to run on the rear of a V8 4th Gen, unless they are snow/ice tires. Thbe 225/60-16's are making the speedo read lower than actual speed already.

p.s. would this 44mm offset make a big difference compared to 54mm?
Make a difference to WHAT? The offset affects how deep the wheels sit in the wheel wells. It does not affect the speedo in any way at all. And, you can not tell how 44mm would compare to 54mm unless you also tell us the width of the wheels. Offset AND width COMBINED determine how deep the wheel/tire sits in the wheel wells.

Matter to WHAT? For what wheel widths?

Check out the FAQ stickied at the top of the "Wheels and Tires" forum topic page... its all covered there.

The diameter of the wheels does NOT affect the speedometer in any way. The only thing that affects the speedo is the outside diameter of the tire. For example, the following sizes are all within 1% of each other:

245/50-16
275/40-17
315/35-17
275/35-18
285/35-18
285/30-19
285/25-20

What you need to do to correct for different tire diameters will depend on the year of your car, which you didn't mention. For a 4th Gen, you need a programmer like a Hypertech, tuning software like LT1_Edit or TunerCat (depends on years), or a mail-order "tune".

Reading your other post about buying tires, appears your question has NOTHING to do with an F-Body. Disregard all the info I wasted my time writing. Next time you post a question, PLEASE have the courtesy to identify that is has NOTHING to do with the F-Body in your signature.
