To me the rim=metal shiney thing. LOL
Tire=Tire and Wheel=Both.
Oh, and shoe is a term used in the late 40's early 50's to refer to the wheel. It's actually a white term but, who cares. Language is ever evolving. It's like saying Trunk or Rear deck.

Re: Wheels VS "rims"

I usually call them wheels. Anything that is bling bling and most of the time larger than a common wheel, I sometimes refer to as rims.

With bicycles the rim is simply a part of the wheel, as are spokes, nipples (snicker) and hubs. If you bought a new bike and were showing it to me, and you said you liked the rims, I'd assume you meant something like this, not this.

Then that's valid as long as you refer to it as the brand ie if I said "I'm wearing Nikes on my feet" that's fine if the brand of shoes I've got is Nike. If I said "I wonder what the best brand of Nilkes is? Is reebok? Adidas? NB? Nike?... hmmm"... that's leave some people kinda wondering where the hell my head was at.

i just think its funny that the overwhelming brand of nitrous systems in cars (that i've seen) is NOS, and yet, when people say, i have NOS in my car (and they do) people just rip on them and pull out some fast and furious lines, most likely just to look cool in front of other board members though.

I am almost anally observant when it comes to what people say when talking cars and I can draw a definitive line as to when it became common place to call any nitrous "NOS". Know when that was? A couple months after the original TF&TF came out.

Before that I hardly EVER heard that.

It was a brilliant marketing move on NOS' part. I just hate everyone else for falling for it so hard.

It's hard to argue with that! I call a wheel a wheel and a rim a rim and don't freely interchange the two.

Sort of like ppl who refer to any SUV as a Jeep. I remember giving a really dumb look to a manager of mine when I worked for McD's at the tender age of 17.

"You know what I saw the other day? The Lexus Jeep!!!"

If she hadn't outweighed me by about 200 lbs, I might have slapped her.

Dude come on...you get what I'm saying. Technically a wheel is the entire piece, and the rim is just part of that. However, you can refer to the wheel as a rim, if you're talking in general conversation with someone. Pretty much anyone is going to know what you are talking about.

It all depends on the context of the conversation. If you are talking to someone about a wheel in more specific terms, chances are they will understand the distinction between wheel and rim.

But the thing is, how often do you just talk about just the rim? Even if you get black wheels with a polished rim, most people would say polished lip.

Basically there's no need to make the distinction 99% of the time when you're talking about cars among car people, or even the general public, so the argument is pointless.

I guess I don't need to type out a long reply. It seems most people here have some sense about them.

Re: Wheels VS "rims"

doesn't matter to me either way. oh , and "new shoes for the feet" means you just got a new wheel & tire package", not new tires for the wheels. it's like taking a stock wheels and replacing them with new aftermarkets, or replacing your current aftermarkets with newer, bigger, or better aftermarkets. now that you've been properly educated, you may all now jump in your slabs and chop blades.
