Wheels VS "rims"

I say it's called a wheel, but my friend thinks it's called a rim. What do you guys think?

Re: Wheels VS "rims"

It's factually called a wheel. No other way around it.

A 'rim' is the outer part of the wheel - it's one of several components.

Re: Wheels VS "rims"

white people who have been isolated from society call them wheels
black people call them rims which is technically slang, but seems to be as accepted as 'ain't' has become.
A lot of people on this board feel the need to correct everyone who says rims telling them rims is slang.

Don't worry those same PC people will be begging us to use the word rims when everyone is refering to 22's as dub deuces.

Proper word is wheel. But I still call 'em rims sometimes.

It's slang derived from an inaccuracy. When somebody says they've got some rims just ask them how they managed to connect the rim to the hub? Watch them get all confused.

It'd be just as inaccurate to call an entire car "chassis".

Just like calling nitrous "NOS" is no different than calling all cereal "Frosted Flakes".

the rim...is the [edit] rim. if the wheel was a rim, then what the hell would we call the rim of the wheel?

well considering my geographic location, i grew up around plenty of ghetto and plenty of slang. "rims" is not just slang, it's incorrect.

and only black people call them rims? and because some black people say it, that makes it slang? sorry, but you sound like the isolated white person here. first of all, people of all different races call them rims, and secondly, black people saying something doesn't automatically make it slang.

I've always called them wheels, but my father refers to them as rims.

Re: Wheels VS "rims"

Wheel is whatever assembly the vehicle rolls on. Like a wagon wheel on a covered wagon, or a caster wheel on your shopping cart. In the case of a car, it means a rim and tire assembly.

Rim is, well, a rim.

Re: Wheels VS "rims"

"I bent my rim and need it repaired"
"Damn dog... which part of da rim you bend"
"Uh... the RIM"
"Yeah but which part?"
"The rim IS the part".

See where that leads?

Let me make the yang of this ying and say it's primarily uneducated black people who couldn't speak proper english if their life depended on it who use the words 'rimz' and 'dubz'.

Then again I know that's not true but neither was your comment.
