what does it take?
what does it take?
was wondering what it would take to run 29 or 30 inch tall tires on my 93 Z28. Im getting 4.10s in an auto but dont want to hit overdrive, and i want to hook wherever i go. Is this complicated? Also if anyone knows where to get a pair of lightweight rims that will fit 30 overall for my car right out of the box please fill me in. Thanks :] (yes i think i should have ordered 355 gears now that i think of it :[)
Re: what does it take?
You're going to need extensive body work. I have seen a 29.5" slick fitted to a 97 30th SS convertible. The front sheet metal of the fender was cut back about 2". The rear bumper cover was shortened by at least 2". The top of the fender opening sheetmetal was "radiused" by at least an inch. The inner fender liners were also enlarged, sort of a "mini-tub".... but left looking stock so it wasn't so evident.
This was the first attempt at body work, and it wasn't enough:

This was after the second attempt to provide enough clearance, when the front edge sheetmetal was hacked some more, and they bought another bumper cover and cut it back some more. The "radius" at the top of the arch was "OK" after the first measurement.
The growth on these tire is tremendous - at least at the 160-MPH the SS was running.

Re: what does it take?
omg that so awsome, how much tire diamiter can i run with stock everything, im wondering cause i just resent my gears back and got some 3.73s. I figured 4.10 was a bit much so i would back it off a bit. Thanks for all ur help!
Re: what does it take?
I ran 28x11.5-15 Hoosier QTP's. Only thing I had to do was move the rear axle back 1/4" to keep them from rubbing on the sheetmetal at the front of the wheel opening. The inside liners had already been hammered for 315 on 17x11 wheels. Currently running a 28x10.5-15W ET Drag, and that required taking about 1.5" off the front of the rear bumper cover.
