Tire sizes

Hello again. I put some 275/40/18's on my 2001 Z28 & they rub my ground effects. Would 255/40/18's fit correctly?

Re: Tire sizes

Without knowing exactly what hits where, its hard to say. But its likely the tires are too large in diameter. That's a 26.7" tire, an inch larger in diameter than your stock tires. You should hve got a 275/35-18 and it might have been better. A 255/40-18 would still be 1/2" larger in diameter than stock.

Exactly where does the tire hit the ground effects?

Re: Tire sizes

Your problem is going to have a lot to do with the fact that you keep trying to use 40 series tires.

Re: Tire sizes

The tires rub the ground effects right where the 2 plastic rivets are. Strange but I only notice them rubbing when I am in reverse. The tires actually tore the two bolts out on the passenger side. My wheels are 18 x 9.5. Do either of you know what size range in 35 series I can use & still stay at stock height? (eg. 225/35/18 - 275/35/18)

I found some 255/35/18's. Would that be a good fit?

Re: Tire sizes

I already told you what you needed.... 275/35-18. Those or 285/35-18 are a good match for the stock diameter. 255 would only be a 25.0" tire. You want 25.6" or 25.7". There's information on tires sizes and wheel widths in the "sticky" FAQ at the top of the page. Again, not knowing where the rivets are in your ground effects, or whether your talking about the front or rear wheels, or both, it just a guess as to why they are rubbing.

Re: Tire sizes

The rivets that I am speaking of are in the front. Thanks.

Re: Tire sizes

Hey if you are going to get bent out of shape, don't answer the question. A 245/40/18 will give you 25.7. Does anyone run this size of tire on a Camaro? I don't really mind if I am a bit off. I plan on having my computer tuned & I will have it adjusted to the new tire size. Injuneer, I was asking for a range of tire sizes. Your post earlier only mentioned 1 tire size. Your second post mentions 2 tire sizes.....

Tom,

Fred answered your question in his first post and you seemed to ignore it. A P275/35R18 would be what I would recommend too. It has almost exactly the same rolling diameter as a P275/40R17 or a P245/50R16.

And Tom, I too speak from experience. Not only do I own two Camaros but I also own a tire and wheel shop.

Here is an example of what a Camaro looks like with P275/35R18 tires. This car is owned by a friend of mine and I sold him both the wheels and tires. We originally tried P275/40R18's on it too with no success.

What was the problem with the 275/40/18's?

Did they rub on the front inner fenders? If so, did the car have a fairly agreesive drop (1.5" or more)?

I run 275/40/18's at stock height right now, but am in the process of installing Hotchkis 1" drop springs - I am thinking this will work with no problems(no ground effects on my car). Any thoughts?

Ok... I'll ignore your posts in the future, since you aren't happy with my efforts to help you. Sorry I pissed you off.

I don't believe they will work at all either lowered or non-lowered. We have not ever been able to get P275/40R18's to work.

We installed them on the Hugger Orange Z/28 shown below that was lowered with an Eibach Pro-Kit. The Pro-Kit only lowered it an inch to an inch and an eighth. They wouldn't work on it, so we put P275/35R18's on it and they work fine.

We also tried P275/40R18's on this non-lowered 2002 Camaro SS. They would not work on it either. Possibly the problem is with the wheels. The Cragar SS wheels have a +.36 offset. If they had a greater possitive offset, maybe they might have worked but I don't think so. What do you think Fred?

In both situations, the tires rubbed on the plastic inner fender and also on the painted body fender lip. In a turn, we were afraid it would catch on it and tear it off.

Re: Tire sizes

I run P275/40R18's on my ZL1 (as all other ZL1's do). In talking with Matt Murphy (owner of GMMG, Inc.) who modified these cars, the only way they could get the P275/40R18's to work was with the specially made Penske adjustable shocks/struts.

Re: Tire sizes

Must be the offset then - I have a +56 on my wheels, which allows them to clear at stock height for now with no problem. We will see when I lower it. Thanks.

Re: Tire sizes

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Had an Exchange server to rebuild... I run 275/40/18 Goodyear Eagle F1's. My wheels have a 56mm offeset. The wheels are Detroit C5 replicas. My tires now have about 1mm left of tread all the way around. They do still rub even with my tread almost gone. I'm sorry if I ignored any earlier comments.. I was trying to find a cheap replacement quickly. Now that the snow has already hit.. It does not matter. Sounds like the question from Mr Z28 was answered.

I found an online seller who has Nexen N3000 265/35/18's for $120.00 each. Is that a good tire? I will never buy the F1's ever again... was not quite a "Goodyear".
