Tire choices. Need $0.02
Tire choices. Need $0.02
Hey guys, I think I have my tire selection narrowed down to three. Driving conditions are half highway, half curvy country roads. Tire size is 275/40-17. Would a 315 in the rear benefit handling on the back roads?
#1
Continental Extreme Contact DW: $660
#2
BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2: $770
#3
Nitto NT05: $652 no road hazard
Looking for a tire that will out perform my old kuhmo mx. Which just happend to brake loose into a fish tail leading to the totaling of my 94.
Thanks

How do you drive the car? Daily, weekend, etc.
The only tire on your list that would be a class comparison to the MX would be the NT-05.
How did your MX's break loose? Rain, failure, pushed to hard?
A 315 rear with a 275 front (if tires are the same) will tighten (push, understeer) the car up as you are adding grip to the rear. The suspensin is set up for equal tires at all corners.

The Kuhmos were grippy but followed the grooves in the roads too much.
When they broke loose, it was because of driver error. I jerked coming into a curve.
Then your saying that as far as performance, the first two choices wouldn't perform as well as the mx?

It is a weekend driver mostly. When I do drive it, it tends to be pretty hard.

OK. So not really the tires fault.
THe first to are 300+ treadwear, the MX was something like 220, and the NT-05 is a 200 treadwear. While not directly comparable across brands, it does serve as a guide. I just got NT-05's and they have a lot of grip. The downside of grippy tires is that when they let go, they usually go big.
Re: Tire choices. Need $0.02
Might want to look into some BFG Sport Comp 2 tires. They are a new tire and relatively cheap in price. They are designed for street use with tons of grip and good wear (320 i think). They actually will be replacing the TA KDW, since BFG has already discontinued that tire (if you have a problem with a KDW, it might be hard to find a replacement). My $.02

SSCamaro99_3:What was your deciding factor to choose the nt05? Would you recommend the nt05 for MO roads? I noticed we are in the same area-ish. I am up past wentzville.
Will do, I pass them up on tirerack because they have no review yet. Time for some Google searching.
Thanks

Re: Tire choices. Need $0.02
I was down to the Toyo Prexes R-1R, Kuhmo Ecsta XS, and Nitto NT-05. It basically came down to price, ad there are several guys on Tech that really like their NT-05's.
I only drive the car about 1500 miles a year, and wanted a lot of grip. Don't drag race anymore, and wanted to get away from drag radials.

I had the NT05's on the front of my 99 TA but the NT05R's on the rear... drag radials dont handle as well as the normal tire...sidewall is softer and its noticeable but still grips hard. The fronts wore out very quickly on the edges of my car but the drag radials lasted 15K miles go figure....
The NT's are soft tires tho and seemed very grippy. I dont think the other 2 on the list compare. If you wanted abit more road race type grip, toyo R888's seem to be very popular. NT01's as well as a DOT legal handling tire.
