Need help with tire sizes.

I currently have 315/35-17 and thinking of going with a smaller tire maybe 305 or 295 (but mainly 305). I'm a noob when it comes to something like this. I believe my rear is 11.5 (correct me if I'm wrong though). Been trying to search the forums for this answer but can't find it. Please help, thank you!

First, some helpful hints.....

Add a "signature" with the info about your car. Don't put all the mods in the "Location" field. When you make your "signature", include the year of your car as a minimum.... its almost impossible to provide an accurate answer without at least knowing the year of the car.

To my knowledge, no one makes 17" tires in 296 or 305 section widths (other than a Kumho 295/40-17 road racing tire). Available sizes are:

275/40-17
285/40-17
315/35-17

I believe my rear is 11.5 (correct me if I'm wrong though).
I think what you are asking is what is the width of my rear wheels? The stock wheels on a 4th Gen WS6 or SS F-Body are 17x9.0". If that's what you have, it isn't likely anyone would have put 315 tires on there, because they are not recommended for a wheel that narrow. So, you must have aftermarket wheels, and no one can tell you what the width is without at least knowing the type of wheels.

Most likely, your rear wheels are 17x11.0". That is a very popular replacement for the 4th Gens. Going to a 275 or 285 on that width wheel is possible, but the tires may look a little "stretched".

To determine the width of your wheels, measure from the outside edge fo the rim in back, to the outside edge of the rim in front. Subtract 1" from that dimension, and that will give you the rim width. "Width" is measured inside the flanges that hold the tire on the rim, where the tire beads seat.

Thanks so much for the information. Sorry for being a noob though. I'm going to be replacing my springs and shocks real soon. So when the tires go off my car I will certainly measure them and hit you back up. Thank so much brotha!
