How can the contact patch be the same if the tire is a third the width of a stock one?

Define "skinnies".... do you mean a 15x3.5" drag wheel, with a 26x4.5" "front runner" drag tire? If so, I wouldn't recommend driving them on the street for any more than a brief trip to the track. Its hard to believe anyone could go from a tire like a 275/40-17 KDW to a 26x4.5 Moroso DS-2 , and not notice a serious deterioration of handling and braking capabilities. I used to drive the car 6 miles each way from home to the track, and it wasn't something I'd recommend for a daily driver.

Another very smart thought, from one of the early posts - the Weld "skinny" wheels are marked "DRAG RACE ONLY", and the Moroso tires are marked "For Racing Use Only, Not For Highway Use". Get in a serious accident, and a good forensic engineer will make you out to be the guilty party in court, and you WILL lose, even if it "wasn't your fault".

My cousin used to work for Weld in customer service and he got calls about once a month with guys wrecking the car running frontrunners on the street.
They are not street legal and have the potential to break on hard cornering.
Weld WILL NOT cover them under warranty if you break them on the street nor will they pay for your smashed up vehicle.
I run Weld Pro Star XPs in the front 15x6 with a VW beetle tire, no front swaybar either and as long as you don,t throw it into corners or try to weave through traffic at high speeds they are fine, with the 15x10s out back I still have the big n littles look.

Good point about the lawyer having a field-day with you if you were in a wreck. Maybe I'll just pick up a set to use on the weekends or something. I have really been getting mixed emotions on this subject. Some say "yea" you can drive all-day everyday on them on the hwy and etc... other say "no" I wouldn't for the life of me.

Well for now, I'll just wait and think some more on it and hopefully make the right decision.

Thanks Guys

Re: Good or bad idea to runner skinnies on an everday driver?

...I drove an '84 Camaro that I used to have on the street for years. It had the 4 x 15 Center Line Convo Pro wheels with Mickey Thompson Sportman 26 x 7 1/2, 4 Ply tires. Not recommended for the street but I did it w/o any problems. At the time I was 'into' the Big & little 'look' {still am depending on the car}. These look AWSOME if your into the 'drag race look'. On the rear I also had the Convo Pro's, not sure if they were the 10" or 12" wide ones {10's I believe}. Anyway I was having problems hooking no matter what type of tires I ran {with a 415 small block in it, car weighted around 2800 pounds}. So I put on Mickey Thompson wrinkle wall slicks. Very illegal but boy did it HOOK! After driving home in the rain one night I took 'em off. The slicks were one those ideas that rated right up there with driving drunk, getting into bar room fights & such....

Re: Good or bad idea to runner skinnies on an everday driver?

Fred hit the nail on the head. Drag rims are meant for DRAG racing, they are not meant for lateral loads that harsh everday street driving can deliver.

Due to liabilities, we do state very clearly that the our rims are meant for drag racing use only. They are very strong, though built for drag racing and not street legal.

I'd have to disagree with the drag look though as zach stated...I think that drag rims look very good and prefer it to large 18+ rims anyday. This is just my view, I suppose I am a bit biased though.

If you want to see a whole bunch of drag rim setups, check out www.sjmmanufacturing.homestead.com , this is a Bogart gallery of wheels we have set up to give guys an idea of how they look on F-bodies.

I kind of prefer the muscle car look.

Here's a set of Steve's Bogart P1 Billets in action:
