different sized tires on front??

Tires on my car are currently P245/50R16

I want to go to a skinnier tire for the fronts,,, if I was to put P235/55s on the front will that be a smaller diam. and if you do go to different diam will the ABS notice this and give me an ABS INOP light???

I guess you could but if you got directional tire you cou;dn't rotate them. also, you'd have to have like 255 on the back and 225 or 215 on the front for them to look much different if that's what you're going for. Personally, I don't see the point in putting a smaller tire on the front.

PS. They are the size diameter.

Re: different sized tires on front??

I am actually looking for skinnier tires with basically the same diameter.

I find my front end darts around a bit since I put the swapped the fronts and backs, the fronts are now barely passable regarding safety certifiable and I will putting more than 500 miles on the car this year so I want to put new tires on the front. Since I will be running on a road that is older and bumpy with pavement patches I want to go slightly skinnier but maintain the same diameter.

What tire has the same diameter but skinnier than a P245/50R16??

I'm not sure how much of an impact that will have. You're talking about getting a tire that's 10mm narrower, that's less than 1/2" smaller.

FYI, a 245/50/16 is 25.65" tall. A 235/50/16 is 25.25" tall. Or you could go with a 235/55/16 which is 26.18" tall.

Re: different sized tires on front??

A 1/2" difference in diameter will not affect the ABS.... you can get that much difference in the front and rear tires just from different inflation pressures and more or less tread being left. The ABS kicks in when one of the wheels is about to stop.... not based on tiny differences in velocity.

A 225/55-16 would match the diameter (within 1/10th inch) of your stock 245/50-16's. A 205/60-16 would also match the diameter, but would not be recommended for an 8" wide wheel like you have.

Not sure you're going to achieve your objective by going to a skinnier tire. I suspect the front end is simply going to overpower the narrow tires and cause heavy understeer. You might want to get front tires to match the rear tires, and play with the tire pressure to get the best balance of ride comfort, handling and tread wear.

I'll move this to "Wheels and Tires" where it belongs.....
