I am debating between crome z06 rims and polished aluminum zo6 rims. How big of a difference in color do the two have? Does anyone have pictures of either ones on their car. Any help always appriciated.

Chrome has more shine than polished aluminum, but they're both very reflective. It's also quite a bit heavier. If acceleration is important to you, pick the aluminum. If you're only concerned about looks, pick the chrome.

 

Why is a chrome plated wheel "quite a bit heavier"? The layers of copper and chrome are extremely thin. The rest of the wheel is identical. I'd be suprised if you could measure the difference in acceleration under laboratory conditions.

Polished - Pain in the padded *** to keep clean, require constant maintenance

 

I don't know about chrome being easy to maintain. I'm constantly struggling to keep up with them, I clean them constantly and pitting is still occuring "inside" the wheels. When they are freshly shined though, DAMN. Wish I could post a pic or 2.

 

He didn't say plated. Are chrome wheels usually just chrome plated? That would, indeed, cancel out my argument. I just know that chrome is heavy stuff.

 

You can't be serious..... solid chrome wheels? Pure chromium is not suitable for construction of wheels. You start with just about any metal wheel - aluminum and steel are the most common - and apply thin layers of copper, nickel and finally chromium. Each layer is EXTREMELY thin... we're talking a couple thousandths of an inch here. In fact, the high luster comes from the nickel layer.... the chromium layer is so thin you can see through it. The chromium takes away the yellowish tint of nickel.

It comes down to personal preference. Chrome has a mirror-like finish. Good quality chrome will not chip. Poor quality chrome will chip and peel.

Polished has a more "satin" shine but with enough work can approach the mirror finish of chrome. If its not clearcoated, maintenance is a major issue. Uncoated, polished aluminum will lose its shine over time, and will stain from some chemicals. Exposure to road salt is near-fatal, since it will cause corrosion and pitting that is difficult to remove. Clearcoated polished wheels eliminate the maintenance issues. But you can't change the level of "polish" with a clearcoated wheel.

My personal preference is "polished"...... but its a preference sort of thing.
