Cheap wheels and fat tires

Cheap wheels and fat tires
Soo i found a great website for cheap rims, this is the website
Camaro Wheels
Anyways i would like to get 17 or 18" corvette for my '98 camaro, now what i want to do is have a nice fat wide tire in the back, the widest without doing any kind of cutting or bending any mods what so ever. I see a 9.5" wide rim can fit a 285/40/17, would that be the widest on the rear without any modifications ? If i could go wider without doing anything would i go up to a 10" rim and what width would that be 305? Or is 285's pretty wide looking in the rear ?
And i don't know anything about offset which i hear about all the time? What is it and how do i know which size to get?
Also what would be a good tire for good traction, it's a summer DD car, i heard nitto's are narrow tires. Soo how are BFG tires being on traction? cause i know they have wide looking tires.

Re: Cheap wheels and fat tires
Did you look at the "sticky" with pics of 17x11.0" wheels, mostly with 315/35-17's on them? There's also info in the "sticky" for FAQ - General that shows what you may need to do to fit that size wheels and tires, and info on the recommended offset. There is also detailed information on offset in several of the FAQ - General posts.

Re: Cheap wheels and fat tires
I run 18" OE Wheels Z06s with BFG KDW IIs in 275/35/18s.....
Couldn't be happier, they have very good dry traction and they are fine in the ran if you stay off the go-go pedal.
That's what matches the factory Tire Diameter in order to keep the Speedometer correct. Larger Widths will actually make the Speedometer read slight slower (1-2 MPH).
In the front I run 245/40/18s, although you can supposedly also run the 275/35/18s as well. I went with the narrower tire that matches factory diameter because the wider tires supposedly track cracks quite a bit more causing the car to wander.

Re: Cheap wheels and fat tires
11's would look pretty ghetto with 285s mounted on them.
In terms of diamerter/speedo calibration: 315/35r17 = 275/40r17 = 245/50r16
Some brands run narrow: Sumitomo, Potenza, Continental, Falken
Brands that run true: BFGoodrich, Pirelli, Goodyear, Michelin
I would love these tires Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 but they are always on backorder and near $400 a peice. So I'll just stick to the skinny Sumi 315s for now. Traction isn't great, but then again spinning is fun. For real traction nothing beats drag radials.

Re: Cheap wheels and fat tires
I just bought a set of wheels from OE. Very nice wheels at a great price!
18x9.5F 255/40/18 and 18x10.5R 285/35/18. Waiting to get car back to mount them but i mounted them on my neighbor's camaro the other day just to see what they looked like and if i had to modify anything. I had to shave a 1/16" out of the center of the rears.

I actually did all four so that I wouldn't have to worry if I went to the same tire size all the way around.

Re: Cheap wheels and fat tires
What are you guys talking about when shaving ? Will i have to worry since mines a '98 ? I'm thinking 285's on the rear will look pretty fat ? how much does the 18's throw off the speedo ? i still know exactly what size i want yet but i'll prob get 18's soo what will i need for off set ? i still dont understand what that's all about eaither.

Re: Cheap wheels and fat tires
In the center of the disc like where the axle is that sticks out that has to go into the center of the rim. The hole in the center of the rim on some of the rears is just a little too small. When i say a little too small i mean very very close to fitting, fixed mine with a dremel a a little sanding drum. Might be the podwer coating actually.
As far as your speedo goes i'm pretty sure width has no effect on your speedo and as long as you keep the overall diameter of the new tires the same or close to the ones you have on there now it won't effect it enough to worry about.
You can view the specs on thier website for the rims you're interested in and it'll show the offset. If you seach under camaro tires only pretty much anything listed there will fit depending on what tire you put on them. I have very little clearance on my rear 285s on these wheels.
