89 firebird, mixing wheel/tire sizes
I'm looking around for new wheels and tires.

I like those wheels, but i'd really like something a bit wider in the back, but i dont really know where to look and how wide i can go without having to mod anything(dont want to add more work)
I was also thinking of 16s or 17s in the from and 18s in the back.
anyone with an 89 running 18s in the back? ow wide?
i like the different size wheels in the front and back to kinda change the line of the car, but do u guys think it'll look stupid?

Am I not giving enough information, or something?
How wide can I go and also if i have the bolt pattern or whatever its called of the lug nuts can I just look at any wheel with that setup or are there other factor to make the wheel fit/not fit?

I think it really depends on what else has been done to the car.
I know of a 1LE 3rd gen autox car that had 17x11's at all four corners.
10" wide would probably be the max width for practicality. Even then you may have to "buy other parts"
Specifically what have you done to the rear suspension?

THANK YOU!!!!! A reply! so eager to get this car going it feels like weeks have past. LOL
Nothing has been modified on the suspension. I havent seen anything more than 8.5 or 9" that i've liked so thats looking good then.
now for bolt patterns and offsets, 5, 475 and 5, 120.7 is what i keep seeing so i assume 475 is 4.75" and 120.7 is the mm or cm? but i cant get it to add up.
then for offsets i see rear wheel drive some places and numbers at other sites.
please translate to simple

With a totally stock rear (main thing being a good quality PHR with rod ends) 9" is probably be the max. (And in autox or RR that may be close) Since that's the range your interested in-cool.
Those numbers=5 (lugs) X 4.75", 5 x 5" and 5 x metric. You of course need the 5x4.75.
I don't own a 3rd gen so I can't help with exact numbers. Do you have an existing wheel? I would mount that and go from there.
Say for instance you have a 16x8 with a 245 tire. Find the wheel, and tire you'd like to go with and then try to apply that to what you have on the car.
Using the 16x8 and 245, say you want to got to a 18x9 with a 275. You are going to be at least 1" wider because of the wheel. If you have the room to space the wheel out farther, and would like the look keep the backspace the SAME AS STOCK, and you will move the wheel out 1" because of the added width.
Say you would rather not have the wheel out a full inch, and DO HAVE ROOM on the inside. You could run 1" LESS backspace, and the wheel/tire edge would be right where the stock setup is.
IMO best bet, is probably to run a 9" wheel with 1/2" LESS backspace. This will distribute the extra width between the inside and outside of the wheel openings.
A truely helpfull resource is TireRack.com. Find the sizes you are looking for and they will give you specs on that tire, including overall height and width.
I would go with an 18x9 front with a 275/30/18 and a 17x9 rear with a 275/40/17. This makes the car look like it has bigger tires in back (to an extent-not mullet big). Best of all is the performance advantage. The front will feel crisper (turning) because of the short sidewall, and the rear will have a little taller sidewall which will help put power down.
My current setup. 17x11 CCW's with 315's front, and 17x12 CCW's W/335's in back. If the EVO/STI are moved out of my class, I'll be going with a 18x12 with 335/30/18 in front (If Kumho comes out with that size)

Thats a ton of help, 18s are too pricey 17 is a good balance, didnt think about more sidewall for power, good info!
Backspace is the same as offset? Do I need to buy somethign to change that?

offset is usually measured in mm from the wheel center.
Positive offset is when the wheel mating surface (lug/hub area) is outside of the center of the wheel. Negative offset is exactly the oposite (think deep dish)
IMO backspace is MUCH easier, and is what most wheel manufacturers use, including custom builders.
