315/35/17 9.5 wheel tire rub

I know the tire should be on a 10" rim. I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing tire rub when pushing it around a corner. I will probably replace the tires with 275/40 but I got a good deal from someone on the board so I could throw them on until after winter. I am also considering a 10 or 11 inch wheel for next year but I dont want them to rub. I drag race sometimes but just for fun I like to corner hard. What have you guys experienced? Anyone rubbing? Is there a certian offset or something I didnt check? These are WS6 17" chrome trans am wheels sorry I dont remember the brand of tire but 275/40/17 on front and 315/35/17 on rear I will attach pictures soon of the difference in tires mounted on the rims. Oh yes I alos had to sand down the center of the wheel on the rear only because it was to tight on the lip of the rotor. Is that common with a 93 LT1 to be alittle different than the newer ones?

For one thing, the Firebird wheels are often not the proper offset for a Camaro. The common way to do 315's on a Camaro is to go with ZR1 17x11 wheels with a +50mm offset. Here's a discussion of it. Needing to sand down the hub a bit is common for early 4th gens. Make no mistake about it, though, most 315's are not meant to mount on 17x9 wheels.

That seems to have more to do with the 11" wheels than the 9.5" that I have either way it looks like I want to replace the 315's with 275's I guess. I will post the pics though on equal rims there isnt that much difference in size. I bet the 315's on the same rim are only about 3/4 inch wider than the 275's. I did do some searching on here and it seemed alot of people where running the 315's and said they had no problem. Mine was my mothers car and only has 38,000 original on it so I dont think the springs are weak.

9.5 wheel tire rub
These are WS6 17" chrome trans am wheels
You appear to be assuming stock WS6 wheels are 17x9.5" . As far as I am aware, they are 17x9.0".

When you put a wide tire on a narrow wheel, the section width (widest part of the tire) will generally be pulled in about 1/2 of the differnce between the "measured wheel" and the wheel they are mounted on. Typically, a manufacturer will "measure" the 315 on an 11" wide wheel. By scrunching it on a 9" wide wheel, you are reducing the overall section width by about 1".... so instead of a 12.4" width, your tire is only about 11.4" wide. Hard to understand why its "rubbing". Exaclty where on the wheel well does it rub?

These are the ones I bought. They were advertised as 9.5 and although I am not 100% sure I thought the wheel was stamed on it 9.5 but of course I mounted the tires so it is alittle tough to tell now. I cant tell where they are rubbing they only did it once going around a hard corner onto another street so there was a small incline. They have only been on for one day so I will have to drive it some more to see if it will rub more often. Man the car feels like it is on rails though I cant imagine what a formula one car must feel like with all of those tires.

Re: 315/35/17 9.5 wheel tire rub

I checked a couple old magazine road tests of various year WS6's, and they all show the wheels as 17x9.0. On the ws6.com webstie, Keith has an article about widening his 1996 WS6 wheels from 9.0" to 11.0".

If the tires only rubbed when you cornered, did they only rub on one particular direction, either turning right or left only? That might be the sign of the body not being centered side-to-side correctly over the rear axle. That's something you can check by measuring the clearance between the inner edge of the tire sidewall and some fixed point on the chassis, like the subframe. The dimension should be the same on both sides. If its not, the tire might rub when cornering in one direction. That could be corrected with an adjustable panhard rod.

Worn bushings in the panhard rod could also contribute to the problem.

I will double check the inside of the wheel maybe they are knock off's cause I could swear I saw 9.5. Either way they rub in either direction on the rear tires when cornering hard. I need to find out where exactly it is rubbing cause it does it either way

Re: 315/35/17 9.5 wheel tire rub

Straight line and not pushing through a corner hard I know I could fit them too. The only time the evne rub and its just a bit is in a very hard corner or the back end is sliding around the corner and it comes back to traction. I cant see the spot on the tire I am going to put it up on the lift this weekend and take a closer look. It does not look like it is rubbing on the outside of the wheel well at all so I assume its inside somewhere.
