28inch tire 15X8

Picked up a set of Pro Stars 15X8 in the back on Bridgstone skinnies and 28 inch M/T E.T. streets in the back.
Came off of a 83 Z and after looking at the wheel well of it, my 96 and my old 86 I am pretty sure they are all the same. Its a tight fit on the 83 but its the same well for third and fourth gens right?

Just gotta get the grinder out now

you can get 28"s on there, seems like I read a writeup on it and the guy just clearenced his wheelwell with a 2.5 pound sledge to make sure he had 1" clearance from the side of the tire. I do remember it was for an auto-x car so he might have been doing that for sidewall clearance in tight cornering or something.

Re: 28inch tire 15X8

If its an ET Street 28/11.5-15 it will fit, because its only 27.6" diameter. The wider 28's (12.5) are larger diameter and may be a problem fitting in the wheel openings, particularly when they grow at high speeds.

What is the backspace of the 15x8" wheel? For a 4th Gen, you need a 5.5" backspace to keep the tire under the fender. A 3rd Gen would typically use 1" or 2" less backspace.

From the base of the wheel (were stud hole are) to the outside lip it was 4 1/4 if I remember right. On his car they were under the fenders but at the bottom they stuck out.

PLEASE don't tell me I am screwed....

Re: 28inch tire 15X8

A third gen has a rear axle assembly that is 3" narrower than a 4th Gen. That's why you need a wheel with 1.5" more backspace on a 4th Gen.

This is where the tire will site on an 8" wide wheel with a 5.5" backspace:

Yours will stick out 1.5" more than that.

(Those are actually 10" wide wheels with 7.5" BS, but that puts the outside edge of the tire the same place as the 8" wide 5.5" BS wheel.)
