17x9 SS rim/tire combo question

It’s time for tires………again. I have the 2000 GM 10-spoke 17x9 SS wheels on my ’97 Z28. I’m running 275/40/17s front and rear. I would like to go a little narrower on the front, and a little wider on the rear. From a search I did, I understand that 285 is the max for that rim. What’s the narrowest I can go? Thanks.

Re: 71x9 SS rim/tire combo question

For a 9inch wheel 275 is the max tire width(that every manf I have seen) I think 245 might be the smallest. You can go to tire track and it will tell you the reccomned wheel width.

I like running 275 all around becuase you can rotate tires.

I have done several hours of tire research and it looks like for themoney the Kumho MX or the Firesteon Wide oval's are the best from what I saw.

Good luck.

I just got a new set of firestones yesterday. I have the MX on my firebird.

Did you read the "what size tires fit what size wheels" post in the FAQ?

Yes I did. That's why I said, "From a search I did, I understand that 285 is the max for that rim" in my post. I could have missed something though. I'm not as smart as some people.

I didn't find any mention of the most narrow tire that would go on that rim. That's actually what my question was. I'll go back and look again.

275=9.00
285=9.5 (unless the manf says other wise.

go to tirerack and look at the sizes etc.

That's funny. I have those Firestones on my 91 Firebird. I'm looking at them for my Camaro also.

You have the wide ovals? How do you like them?

I enjoyed the Kumho MX and looks like I will get 25k on them tires with a rating of 220 that is good.

I just thought I would try a different tire and figured the wide oval look good after many hours of research. And hopefully they will make it 30k.
