Is it possible to mount a 285/40/17 or 275/40/17 on a 17x11 wheel??? Is it safe?

Re: 17x11

Most manufacturers recommend a wheel width of 9" - 11" for a 275/40-17

Sorry to highjack this thread

So you are saying a 285 will fit on a 17x11 w/ no safety or problem issues?

Thanks...

Re: 17x11

If the tire manufacturer says the tire will fit properly on an 11" wide wheel, I'd accept that at evidence that it will work with no safety or operability issues. Since it will be on the widest wheel that most manufacturers will accept, it may look a bit "stretched" compared to the way it would look on a narrower wheel. Its not going to offer much in the way of protection to the wheel lip.

Once you have picked a tire, look at the tire manufacturers recommendation for that specific tire. Not all manufacturers come up with the same recommendations, and even tires of a different model from the same manufacturer may have different recommended wheel widths.

Yes- if you have any doubts all tires have a recommended rim width (or range of rim widths they will fit safely) and a measured rim width, which would be the ideal rim size to fit onto. Most 285s should have a rim width of 10", while 315s would be 11". So it would be pulling the tire out a bit to fit, but within manufacturer's recommendations. 285s should go on a 10" or 11" rim. It might vary between brands, but just because the same indicated tire size may not mean they're exactly the same size.
